Trench Warfare
During WWI, trench warfare was a big part of the war. The soldiers dug trenches and fought the war in deep holes. The trenches were rat-infested ditches. When they had no food to eat, they had to eat the rats from the trenches. The trenches would get flooded causing the soldiers to get trench foot. -

Uncle Sam also known as Walter Botts. Uncle Sam was on a propaganda poster to get people to join the military. He was once in the military and was ranked a private. After that Walter Botts was selected to be the model of Uncle Sam. -
Tanks
The British have the first tanks ever used in battle, they are useful for breaking through barbed wire and clearing a path for the soldiers. Tanks are still used today. -
U.S. alerted by Zimmerman telegraph
The British intelligence service intercepted a telegraph from Germany to Mexico. The Zimmerman telegraph was asking Mexico to start war with the U.S. and in return, receive land back from the U.S., Mexico declined because they thought it wasn't worth it. The British informed the U.S. about it and it angered them and was one of main reasons for the U.S. to join the war. -
The U.S. enters the War
The U.S. decides to enter the war because of Germany. The Zimmerman Telegraph gave Germany the idea to get Mexico to join the war. They sent Mexico an offer to to join the war, trying to get the U.S.to enter the war and become allies. -
The Selective Service Act
This act was put into effect to recruit many men to fight in the U.S. army. This made it to where if you were from the ages of 21 to 30 you would have to send registration mail to the military. -

In Missouri a 16-year-old, Frank Woodruff Buckles, tried and succeeded in enlisting in the U.S. army. -
Frank's unit
When Frank was enlisted he soon got sent over sea's with his unit called First Fort Riley Casual Detachment, it consisted of 102 men. The ranking officer was a sergeant. -
Frank going to Scotland
Frank was sailing from Hoboken to Glasgow, their unit continued on to Winchester, England, to await cross-channel shipment to France because a unit of the 6th Marines was operating at Camp Hospital, near Winchester. Frank's unit was forced to replace the Marines who were sent on to France. -

Frank took a motorcycle with a cart of the side of it to England to meet Colonal Jones of the 6th Calvary and asked to be sent to France but got denied -
