THE STAGES OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.

    Old English (Fifth C.)

    Invasions of Germanic Tribes reach Great Britain (Who were pressured by The Hunos)
    Also arrrived Invasions of Jutes, Saxons & Anglos.
    It was born new dialects depend to the geographic region occupated.
    A part of the Britain Island was under Danish rule.
  • Period: 900 to 1100

    Age of Splendor of Old English (Ninth- Eleventh C.)

    Alfredo "El Grande" drove out The Danes.
    He initiated the educational and cultural work (teaching of the English and Latin language).
  • Period: 1150 to 1150

    Middle English (Mid Eleventh C.)

    The Normans invaded Britain (cultural & political domination by The French) And that was for three centuries.
    The English Language is divided again into dialects. The top four were: Latín --> for scientific and cultural vocabulary. Nordic Dialects --> for everyday life. French --> for government and aristocracy. Germanic core --> Any words like sun, moon, star, day...

    Twelfth and Sixteenth C.

    English was depreciated and it became the language of the people; vulgar and uneducated.
    The French and Spanish were the most prestigious.

    The english crown and the government needed official documents written in English.
    The Renaissance and religion led to English regaining dignity and relevance.

    Modern Times (Sixteenth - Eighteenth C.)

    The Contemporary English became the "London dialect" for the enterprising classes.
    Samuel Johnson with his "Dictionary of the English Lenguage" (1755) brought English lexicography.
    L. Murray with his "An English Grammar" (1795) specified the fundamental rules for grammar.
