140
Claudius Ptolemy
Claudius Ptolemy considered the Earth to be the centre on the universe (geocentric) in (about) 140AD. -
1530
Nicolaus Copernicus
At the 1530s, Nicolaus Copernicus made a theory that the solar system is heliocentric (where the planets and planetary objects orbit the sun) -
Galileo Galilei
Galileo discovered gravity in 1589. Galileo is the first known person who studied the skies in detail with a telescope. He made numerous significant discoveries in astronomy including the Phases of Venus and the four largest moons of Jupiter. Galileo discovered that Venus went into phases and discovered Saturn and Mars (September) in 1610. He discovered Jupiter's moon on January 7, 1610. He published a book that says that the Earth orbited the sun in 1632. -
Johannes Kepler
Johannes Kepler published his first 2 laws about planetary motion in 1609 - (1) All planets move about the Sun in elliptical orbits, having the Sun as one of the foci. (2) A radius vector joining any planet to the Sun sweeps out equal areas in equal lengths of time. He invented the Keplerian telescope in 1611. -
Edmond Halley
Edmond Halley discovered Halley's comet's recurrence. He suggested the same comet could return to Earth in 1758. He reasoned that comet sightings in 1531, 1607, and 1682 were made by one single comet returning every 76 years. -
William Herschel
William Herschel discovered Uranus and its 2 moons on March 13, 1781. He also made the theory of stellar evolution and he discovered infrared light in the 1800s. -
Discovery of the first four asteroids
The first asteroid, Ceres was discovered by the Italian priest and astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi was discovered in 180. It was accidentally discovered. The other 3 asteroids (2 Pallas, 3 Juno, and 4 Vesta) were discovered over the next few years, with Vesta found in 1807. -
Urbain Le Verrier
Urbain Le Verrier discovered Neptune with Johann Gottfried Galle and John Couch Adams. -
Clyde Tombaugh
Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto in 1930, 4755 Nicky
on 6 October 1931, 3310 Patsy (an asteroid) on 9 October 1931. He discovered 15 asteroids in total (they are not here on the list because I can't fit it all in here) -
Voyagers 1 and 2
Voyagers 1 and 2 were launched by NASA in 1977 at different months. The Voyagers were made to conduct closeup studies of Jupiter and Saturn, Saturn's rings, and the larger moons of the two planets.Voyager 1 and 2 explored all the giant planets of our outer solar system, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune; 48 of their moons; and the unique system of rings and magnetic fields of which these planets possess.
