    Aristarchus of Samos
In the third century B.C. Aristarchus found out how far away the moon was by measuring the shadow of the Earth on the Moon during a lunar eclipse.

    Space Craft

Between the 15th and 16th century, Leonardo de Vinci desined a type of space craft.
  • Sputnik 1

    Sputnik 1
On October 4, 1957 Sputnik 1 becomes the first man-made object to travel into space. Its mission is to orbit the moon, and it also gets information about space.

    Voyager 1 and 2

Through this short period of time, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 leave Earth. They were supposed to just inform us back on earth about Jupiter and Saturn. Voyager 1 is now in interstellar space, and Voyager 2 will be in 2016
  • Hubble Space Telescope

    Hubble Space Telescope
The Hubble Space Telescope pointed to an area that had no stars visible to the naked eye, about the size of a tenth of the full moon. It focused on that area for four mounths and in that space it found over 10,000 galaxies. These are about 13 billion light years away.
  • Hubble Ultra Deep Field

On March 9, 2004, Astronomers at the Space Telescope Science Institute show the a picture of the farthest parts of space this shows the first galaxies to be formed after the Big Bang.
  • Voyager 1

    Voyager 1
After about 35 years, Voyager 1, is the first craft to make it out of the solar system, and into interstellar space. In August of 2012, Voyager (1) was about 11.66 billion miles away from the sun. (18.76 billion km)
  • Hubble eXtreme Deep Field

    Hubble eXtreme Deep Field
On September 25, 2012, the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field is released, showing 10 years of pictures (from the same part of space) showing so far away that it shows them from a perspective of 13.2 billion years ago.
  • The Farthest Galaxy

    The Farthest Galaxy
z8_GND_5296 was found on October 3, 2013 by the Hubble Space Telescope. This galaxy is the farthest (and oldest) galaxy that we have ever discovered. It is thought to have been formed about 700 million years after the beginning of the universe. It is estimated to be about 30 billion light years away, because it is so far away, we get to view the galaxy as it seemed to be about 13.1 billion years ago.
