FIRST TELESCOPE EVER
Galileo created the first telescope, this was a huge step in the way of technology. If it weren't for him, assuming that no one else would have invented it, we wouldn't have the knowledge of our solar system that we do now. -
First Reflector Telescope
Isaac Newton built the first Refracter telescope. Newton replaced the primary lens(which is what they originally used), with a polished, rounded, metal mirror. -
First Reflecting Telescope
The first reflecting telescope built by Sir Isaac Newton in 1668 is a landmark in the history of telescopes, being the first known successful reflecting telescope. It was the prototype for a design that later came to be called a newtonian telescope. -
Universal Gravitation Theories
Issac Newton published the Theory of Universal Gravitation. This was the beginning of modern astronomy. -
Theory of Relativity
Albert Einstien came up with the theory of relativity which explains physics, space, and time. -
First Liquid fuels
Goddard launches the first liquid-fueled rocket -
First Liquid Filled Rocket
Goddard launches the first liquid-fueled rocket -
First Picture of Earth
These were the first pictures from earth about 60 miles away. This was a big step because we now knew how Earth looked from the outside of the planet. -
First photograph of Earth from orbit
This was a huge leap because we knew then that we had the technology to do amazing things! We took a picture of our own earth, imagine what we would do next! -
Launched Sputnik
The Soviet Union launched the first satellite, Sputnik, into space. -
Satellites
First artificial satellite
First signals from space
This is a huge step in the way of technology. We sent up our first satellite and we even recieved signals from it. -
Launched Sputnik 2
November 3 - The Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 was launched with the dog named Laika on board. Laika did not survive the voyage. -
Luna 1
First firing of a rocket in Earth orbit
First reaching Earth escape velocity or Trans Lunar Injection
First detection of solar wind -
Another Wold
This was the first time that a picture was taken of another world. This was huge because we found out how other worlds look, and we can study and learn from them. -
First humans in space!
First human-piloted space flight–(Alan Shepard)
First human-crewed suborbital flight
This was one of our biggest achievements in space history! We were able to study our earth for a while now, but now we went up INTO SPACE, and we looked at it from above! -
First Mars flyby (closest approach 9,846 kilometers)
IMAGINE not knowing what other planets looked like close up, but able to see pictures! Now they had the first Mars space fly by, to take a closer look! Incredible! -
Mariner 4
First close up photos of another planet, Mars. This was great because we could actually see the different features on mars, to see if it was habitable. -
Ultraviolet
First orbital ultraviolet observatory. -
Venera 7
This was the first soft landing on another planet (Venus). This was also the first signals from another planet. -
Pioneer 10
First human made object sent on escape trajectory away from the Sun. (NASA) -
Apollo-Soyuz Test Project
This was first mission to enter the asteroid belt and leave inner Solar System. This was the first ever mission that entered the asteroid belt ANS left the inner solar system! This mission was conducted by the USSR and USA (NASA). -
Voyager 1
Closest ever Saturn flyby (closest approach 124,000 kilometers), close encounter of Titan and encounters with a dozen others. This is (to date) the closest Saturn flyby, besides this, we only have pictures of Saturn. -
Pioneer 10
First spacecraft beyond the orbit of Neptune (first spacecraft to pass beyond all Solar System planets(NASA) -
STS-41-B
First untethered spacewalk, Bruce McCandless II. We have had other moon walks, but this one was WITHOUGHT being tied to the space craft. Everyone always knows Neil Armstrong to walk on the moon, but in reality, he was tethered to the space shuttle. -
Voyager 2
First Neptune flyby (closest approach at 29,240 km) -
Voyager 1
First image of the whole universe!! -
Ulysses
First polar orbit around the Sun! -
Mir
Record longest duration spaceflight (437.7 days) set by Valeri Polyakov (FKA) can you even imagine being on a plane for more than a day? Try a space ship! They were on the space ship for almost a year and one third! Wow! 4/7 DAYS!! That is unbelievable! -
NEAR Showmaker
First landing on an asteroid (433 Eros)u -
Kepler Mission
Kepler Mission is launched, first space telescope designated to search for Earth-like exoplanets[3] -
New Horizons
First flyby of dwarf planet (Pluto).
Last original encounter with one of the nine major planets recognized in 1981. (NASA) -
Lettuce 1
First food eaten that was grown in space (lettuce).
