First steps
William Thornhill buys his freedom and the family set foot on 'their' land -
Meeting the Dharug people
Whilst farming the Thornhill family come into contact with teh Dharug family for the first time. -
Blackwood and his wife
Will leaves his family behind to visit Blackwood, a settler who has been living off the land for a while. He discovers that he has taken an Aboriginal wife. -
Smasher
Whilst up river on a job, Sal and the boys meet Smasher who shares with them the realities of life on the Hawkesbury River. -
Playful beginnings
Dick Thornhill encounters the Dharug boys for the first time. He is cautious at first but soon they begin speaking each other's language - play. -
Sing song
After a few months sleeping under the stars, the Thornhill family gather inside their house and share a song with their neigbours. -
Learning from the Dharug
Dick continues to meet with teh Dharug boys and even joins them in the bush, learning how to make fire from sticks. He is discovered by his brother Will who alerts his parents. -
Smasher's slave
Wanting to earn a bit of money, Will returns to Smasher's place to collect some cargo. He finds something sinister there. -
The Dharug women
Whilst the men are away, Sal meets the Dharug women who make a humourous exchange. -
Sal gets sick
Sal falls ill and is healed by Blackwood's wife -
The corn
6 months on and the corn planted by the Thornhills is ready to be picked...except the Dharug family are first to take the crop. Will is furious. -
Massacre
One of the settlers loses his life after coming into confrontation with the Dharug people. This sends the men of the Hawkesbury on a murderous rage to wipe out the family completly. -
Final tally
As the Thornhills are seen successfully living off the land, the only survivor of the Dharug people, Jack, sits and watches as Will makes his mark.
