The Decembrist Revolt
The Decembrist Revolt included members of the upper-class and those who were in the military. After the death of Alexander I, they staged an uprising, convincing some of the troops in St. Petersburg to refuse to take a loyalty oath to Nicholas I and to demand the accession of his brother Constantine. The rebellion, however, was poorly organized and did not succeed. Colonel Prince Sergey Trubetskoy, who was to be the provisional dictator, fled immediately. -
NIcholas II Becomes Czar of Russia
Nicholas II took the throne after his father died of kidney disease at age 49. Nicholas admitted to one of his friends that he was not ready to be a czar and that he was not ready for ruling. Within a month he married Princess Alexandra of Hesse-Darmstadt. -
The Russo-Japanese War
Japan wanted Russia to abandon its expansion policy in the east. Japan and Russia began fighting over dominance for Korea and Manchuria. Japan became the first Asian power to defeat a European power. -
Bloody Sunday
Bloody Sunday was a massacre in St.Petersberg. A group of peaceful demonstrators marched along until Nicholas's Uncle, Grand Duke Vladimir, ordered them to stop. Then he ordered the security to shoot. More than 100 protesters were killed. -
WWI
Russia joined France and Britain to form a Triple Alliance. Russia entered the first World War with the largest army in the world containing about 1,400,000 soldiers. The Russian army was commanded by General Sukhomlinov, though Czar Micholas wished to lead the Russian Army into battle. -
The March Revolution
The March Revolution was throughout the whole month. People in Russia were furious with the outcome of WWI and lack of resources. Riots and strikes took place all over Russia. March 4th many workers went on strike due to poor pay. Things started to get worse and worse. Strikes got bigger and more serious. -
Czar Nicholas II Abdicates the Throne
Czar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate the throne by Petrograd insurgents and a provincial government took his place. Nicholas and his family were killed after a private meeting took place. -

THe Creation of the U.S.S.R.
Also known as the Soviet Union, the new communist state was the successor to the Russian Empire and the first country in the world to be based on Marxist socialism. -
Vladimir Lenin's Death
Vladimir Lenin dies on January 21,1924 due to brain hemorrhage at age 54. His body was embalmed and put into a mausoleum near the Moscow Kremlin. Petrograd was renamed Leningrad in his honor.
