    • believed in absolute rule: this made the Russians feel ignored and angry
    • the Russian people tried to industrialize and urbanize, but the Czar did nothing in response
    • he created the Duma, an elected legislature intended for people to at least have some participation in the gov't : created because people were mad at him and the Czar wanted his people to like him *His rule led to the Bolshevik Revolution
  • Russo-Japanese War (1904 - 1905)

    Russo-Japanese War (1904 - 1905)
    • the two nations were already arguing over land in northern China: this caused tension to grow between them, leading to war
    • Japan had advantages including more ground troops in northern China, and their navy was better than Russia's because they were more industrialized
    • Russia lost the war, lost land in northern China which was embarrassing for them: Russia became a constitutional monarchy *pushed them to industrialize, added to the Czar's bad reputation and the creation of the Duma
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    • 200,000 workers marched on the Czar's Winter Palace intending to make a list of grievances because they wanted the living conditions to improve
    • the police open-fired on the protesters killing 100 of them and injuring 3,000 Bloody Sunday caused more strikes and disorder throughout *Russia and the Russian people disliked the Czar more than they had before also was another reason the Duma was created.

    • the Duma was an elected legislature created by Czar Nicholas II even though he preferred absolute rule because he was disliked by the Russian people and he wanted them to like him
    • things that caused people to dislike him - the Russo-Japanese War, Bloody Sunday, and the Russians felt ignored by the government *The Duma didn't help anything because it didn't give the citizens enough participation in the government, and he was still disliked.
  • Russia's Participation in WWI (1914 - 1917)

    • Russia joins WWI to help Serbia
    • because of Russia's lack of industrialization, they dropped out of the war
    • the Russians want Russia to drop out of the war but the Czar wouldn't *This contributes to Czar Nicholas II's bad reputation
  • Death of Rasputin

    • he was killed by the nobility because when the Czar was fighting during WWI, his wife was left with the government responsibility, it was thought that Rasputin was making the decisions instead and this angered the nobility *The Czar was blamed for his death and added on to the Czar's bad reputation
  • Civil War (November 1917-October 25, 1920)

    • part of the Bolshevik Revolution
    • Lenin creates the Red Army, made to protect the revolution consisting of the Bolsheviks with leader Leon Trotsky
    • White Army is created to return to life before the revolution and consists of conservatives, the Allies, and Czar supporters
    • Russia is left with disease and many killed people because Russia did not have enough supplies for it's citizens and it's army *The Red Army wins the Civil war, giving them the power to create the USSR
  • Provisional Government

    • Czar Nicholas II took control of the army during WWI and was blamed for military failures
    • street demonstrations broke out in the capital
    • on the 15th Czar Nicholas II gave up his power and a provisional (short term) gov't was set up *The Provisional Government failed and lead to the Bolshevik Revolution
  • Abdication of Czar Nicholas II

    • the Czar was blamed for military failures that happened during WWI
    • in March 1917 street demonstrations (riots/protests) broke out in the capital *The Provisional Government was created right after the abdication of Czar Nicholas II
  • Bolshevik Revolution (1917 - 1920)

    • soviets, or local councils of workers, peasants, and especially soldiers popped up around Russia
    • these soviets because more powerful than the Provisional Gov't Lenin takes control of the weak gov't and the Bolsheviks overthrow the Provisional Gov't in 1917 *This causes the Allies and some Russians to become worried that communism will take over and leads to the Civil War.

    • was created to spread communism made of self governing republics that discourage nationalism
    • the communist party (former Bolshevik) holds all the power in Russia: but this is not true communism *The USSR will exist until 1991

    - Stalin manipulates his way to power despite Lenin's concerns
  • Stalin's Rise to Power (1922-1927)

    • by 1928 Stalin is in total command of the Communist Party and will later become dictator of the Soviet Union

    • he has Trotsky exhild *Stalin's rule shows that the USSR does not have a true communist community
  • Leon Trotsky's Exile

    • he is exiled to Mexico by Stalin and is murdered by an assassin that was hired by Stalin *This shows the type of extreme and paranoid leader that Stalin was
