Started a civil war with Rome when he came back with his army, when they told him not to. He made reforms to help the poor, and asked for the title "dictator for life".

    Marius was a general who changed the Roman army by turning citizen-soldiers (who fought for their love of Rome) into soldiers who were paid, usually by their generals. He also disregarded the law of being consul that states you can only serve once every ten years.

    The Gracchus brothers were two patricians who tried to reform the republic. They thought there should have been more land given to plebieans, which would have given them more rights. They were killed by Senate's supporters.

    -Obsession with extravagance
    -Lust for battles
    -Growing social enequality
    -More slaves from other countries led to job shortages for common Romans
