The northern and southern polititions have heated debates over the growth of slavery. They eventually agreed to make the slave states and free states equal. -
The nullification crisis
Southerners felt that the tariffs were unfair and only supported the North. The Vice President John C. Said any state could nullify federal law. -
Compromise of 1850
Congress had many heated debates and new territories won from Mexico would be admired as free states. California would be a slave state and the rest would be free. -
Fugitive slave law
This law was passed in 1850 and it said that Afican Americans who fled North could be captured if they were slaves in the north. -
Bleeding Kansas
The anti-slavery government was attacked. To avenge this attack, extreme abolitionists murdered several pro-slavery neighbors. -
Dred Scott decision
Dredd scott sued for his freedom but judges declared that he was his owners property even though he was in the North. -
Attack on Harpers ferry
John Brown wanted to inspire slaves to fight for their freedom. He and his men eventually got captured and eventually were sentenced to death. -
Election of 1860
Abraham Lincoln wins the election this causes the southern states to cecede.
