The Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was a compromise regarding slavery in unorginized territories. It stated that besides Missouri, slavery was not allowed above the 36' 30' line. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
After the Mexican American War, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was created. This gave the United States a large amount of land that was below the 36' 30' line. This meant more space for slaves. -
Wilmont's Proviso
A Northen Congressman offered Wilmont's Proviso. It planned to prohibt slavery from all aquirred Mexian land from the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. It was never passed, but it angered the south. -
Fugitive Slave Act
The Fugitive Slave Act allowed slave owners to hunt down their slaves that had ran away to the North and bring them back to the South. Northereners that don't turn in a run away slave could face jail time. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This act allowed the people to vote weather or not certain state would be a slave state or a free state through popular sovereignty. This was contradictory of the Missouri Compromise's 36' 30' rule. -
Bleeding Kansas
Pro- slavery southerners enter kansas in an attempt to intimedate anti-slavery northerners. This leads to brutal fighting. -
Birth of the Republican Party
The Republican party was formed in Ripon Wisconsin. They were the complete opposites of Democrats. -
Collapse of the two party system
The Demcrats and Republicans no longer work together. -
Brooks's cane vs. Sumner's face
Congressman Preston Brooks of the south beat congressman Charles Sumner of the north with a cane after Sumner condemed slavery during a speech. This angered the north and made the south laugh. -
Dred Scott Case
This case stated that slaves had no rights and were just properties. Northerners were angered and it heightend the tension. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
This was a book that illistrated the conditions slaves faced in the South. Northerners were horrified and, Southerners were angry stating that the dipiction was in accurate. -
The Election of 1858
Debates held between Lincoln and Douglas forced the issue in polotics. -
John Brown's Slave Revolt
Brown lead an attempt to arm slaves and aid in a revolt. He was captured and hung in the process. Southerners now feared that the North were secretly arming slaves. -
The election of 1860
Lincoln, an anti-slavery Republican was elected. This brought Southerners to a conclusion that the only option left was to secede from the Union. -
Rejection of The Crittenden Compromise
The Crittenden Compromise sought to restore things back to the days of the Missouri Compromise. This was rejected and now the Civil War was in sight. -
Fort Sumter
The South attacked a Union fort in their land. This was their first use of the military by their newly form country.
