    Henry Clay who was known as the great compromiser settles the debate saying that the Maine would be admitted as a free state and that Arkansas would be open to slavery. North and south states were getting at each others faces with the growth of slavery.

    Southern states felt that tariffs were unfair and only supported the North. South Carolina threatened to secede after being denied from the state's argument.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    The fugitive slave act was passed
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    Pro-slavery and anti-slavery were at eachothers throats for a while. Kansas had 5,000 people nearby proslavery Missouri and finally voted that in Kansas, proslavery was illegal. The state had a proslavery legislature.
