Hitler FIghts in the First World War
When World War I began Hitler (far right) signed up for a Bavarian regiment. Hitler became well acquainted with the horrors of war almost immediately. In his regiments first engagement 2500 of the 3000 soldiers were killed or went missing. He was a very daring soldier, always signing up for dangerous missions even after he barely escaped death. Hitler was seen as a different soldier in that he liked to discuss art or history. -
Germany Surrenders and the Treaty of Versailles is signed
The treaty that was signed at Versailles Palace to end World War One in which Germany surrendered to the Allies. Germany was hit hard by the terms of the treaty. For example their military was reduced down to 100,000 men and they were not allowed to have tanks. Their Navy was only allowed six ships and no submarines. They had to give up large chunks of their territory to neighboring countries. -
Nazi Party is formed
Hitler never had a real job in his life until he fought for the Germans in World War I. After the war he joined the German workers party. When he did he became obsessed with doing well with this venture. It was very unknown at the time Hitler joined and every time they had meetings, very few people attended. -
Hitler Becomes leader of the Nazi Party
As Hitler was gaining popularity in cities like Munich, Germany, so was the Nazi Party. Hitler knew his party needed him. As he attempted to bring his popularity to Berlin, a revolt was lead against him in Munich by the current leader of the Nazi party. Hitler rushed back to Munich and immediately quit the party. He was eventually voted back as Chancellor by a vote of 543-1. -
Beer Hall Putsch
Hitler lead his “army” to a local beer pub where government leaders were holding a meeting. His “army” quickly captured them and Hitler put himself in charge. He then led them to the War Ministry where police opened fire on them. In the ensuing riot they were quickly subdued and arrested. -
Hitler is tried for treason
Hitler and his followers are tried for treason for trying to overthrow the Bavarian government. He was sentenced to five years in prison, however he only served nine months. During his time in prison he wrote Mein Kampf. Mein Kampf is his outline for Germany and what would become World War II and the Holocaust. -
Mein Kampf is written
Mein Kampf is a book that Hitler wrote while he was incarcerated, outlining his vision for the future of Germany and the Nazi Party. Also, what would become the Holocaust. He was sentenced to five years because of his suspected treason in the Beer Hall Putsch in which he and his followers tried to seize the government in Bavaria in a coup d’ etat. He only served nine months. -
Wall Street Stock Market Crash
When the Stock Market saw a huge bounce on September fourth of that year people began investing heavily in it hoping to take advantage of the high in the markets. However those markets were not there to stay. This crash was due to many things. The first being that the stock brokers did not have to buy the stock at full price and only had to pay 10% of the value. There was a massive amount of this and it isn’t sustainable with that much money being borrowed at one time. -
Nazis are elected to the Reichstag
On this day the Prussian government was ousted by a coup and a few days later at the elections in Germany the Nazis finally were successful. Hitler had been running on the Nazi ideals since 1924, unsuccessfully but gaining popularity every time. In this election the Nazis gained enough voted that they got a 37% minority in the Reichstag. -
Hitler Voted Chancellor
After the second election the problem still was not fixed so President Hindenburg fired Chancellor Papen and hired an army general named Kurt von Schleicher. The general could not secure a majority either so he resigned after 57 Days. Hindenburg finally resented and named Hitler the Chancellor. The Nazis began to move to consolidate power. -
The Reichstag Burns
The Reichstag or German Parliament building was burned down due to arson in 1933. The Nazis claimed that the communists in Germany were responsible because they were trying to overthrow the government. This allowed Hitler's government to put in emergency measures that suspended many German constitutional rights such as political protesting, voting, and freedom of the press. The Nazi used the fire to get President Hindenburg to sign these emergency declarations. -
Hitler becomes Dictator
After President Von Hindenburg died, Hitler declared himself Dictator. He made the army swear an oath of allegiance to him. He also swept aside the remnants of the Democratic government so he could start his Third Reich. He swore to the German people it would last for a thousand years. It was taken down by the Allies a little over a decade later.
