King Charles the II gave 8 British noblemen the land Carolina in a royal charter as a reward for faithfully supporting them. -
The Province of New York
New York becomes a British colony after the Dutch surrender the city New Amsterdam (now New York City) along with the rest of the colony as a result of the British taking control of New Amsterdam. -
The Province of Pennsylvania
William Penn receives land in America as a gift from King Charles II. This would become Pennsylvania, and be under control of the Penn family until the Revolution. -
The Province of Georgia
King George II gives a corporate charter to General James Oglethorpe for the land that would become Georgia. Oglethorpe made this land essentially a haven for debtors and poor colonists. By this point, the 13 major colonies had been established.
