    Harsh Working Conditions

    -Women of the working classes would usually be expected to go out to work, often in the mills or mines.
    -In the early 19th century there was no restriction on the age of the workers, this led to children as young as 8 or 9 being required to work 12 or more hours a day.
    -Working conditions were often unsanitary and the work was dangerous, if the injured in the mills they would lose their jobs.
  • Assassination of James Garfield

    Assassin:
    -Charles J. Guiteau
    Why:
    -He thought God had told him to shoot the president
    -He had written a speech for the Garfield that helped him win the presidential election
    -Formulated the delusion that the speech was a key factor in the presidents victory
    -Asked to be rewarded with a consulship (chairman of the senate) in Paris
    Result:
    -Doctors killed the president because they didn't wash their hands
    -This helped create the Pendlenton Act
  • The Pendletin

    -Patronage System is a practice after winning an election gives government civil service jobs to its supporters, friends & relatives.
    -Merit System is the process of promoting & hiring government employees base their ability to perform & not base on political connections.
    -Pendleton Act was created in response to the Pres. Garfield's assassination & civil service commission was created to back-up the new acts and or put into action.

    -Supreme court case upheld the Constitutionality of segregation under the "Separate but equal" doctrine.
    -It stemmed from an 1892 incident in which African-American train passenger Homer Plessy refused to sit in a Jim Crow Car.
    -Segregation to become a law in the U.S. Jim Crow laws, which were a system of laws meant to discriminate against African-Americans, spread across the U.S.

    -The populist movement was a revolt by farmers in the south and midwest against the Democratic and Republican parties for ignoring their interests and difficulties.
    -For over a decade farmers were suffering from crop failures, falling prices, poor marketing, and lack of credit facilities.
    -The Key platform of the populist party where unlimited coinage of silver to raise for prices and make loan repayment easier, Direct Election of Senators instead of by state legislatures Graduated Income tax.

  • The Klondike Gold Rush

    -Was a migration by an estimated 100,000 set but only 30,000 arrived to the Klondike region of the Yukon in Northern western Canada between 1896 and 1889.
    -Around 4,000 found gold, Many gave up due to the difficulties of the journey and returned home some were not able to survive the extreme temperatures and died.
    -The greatest economic impact prospector passed through settlements and the money from supplies they purchased boosted the economy considerably.

  • Discovery of Gold in the Klondike

    -100,000 prospects left for the Klondike but only 40,000 people reached the region. The trip was long, cold and difficult conditions were, harsh and starvation malnutrition and exposure to cold were serious problems.
    -Many gave up and several died, the greatest economic impact was on the towns in the region, Money from the supplies the prospectors purchased there boosted the economy.
