Charlie develops a crush on Sam
¨I was very happy to know that because I would really like to ask Sam on a date someday"(page 21) Charlie meets Nothing (a.k.a. Patrick) in his wood shop class. In that same week he sees Patrick at a football game sitting with a girl named Sam. They all become friends and hang out and smoke and Charlie develops a crush on Sam that same day. -
The reader finds out that Charlie witnesses a girl being sexually assaulted
¨I had to stop watching at that point because I started to feel sick, but it kept going on, and they kept doing other things, and she kept saying ¨no¨.¨ (page 30) Charlie was in middle school when he witnessed a rape and sexual assault at his older brothers party he threw in their house. Charlie was young at the time and was told to stay in his room during the party. A boy and a girl walked in and asked to use the room and Charlie did not know what it was for. The girl is hinted to be Sam. -
Charlie´s First Kiss
¨I want to make sure that the first person you kiss loves you. Okay?¨ (page 70) Charlie exchanges secret santa gifts with everyone at Sam and Patrick´s house. Sam brings Charlie into her bedroom to give him her present which was a type writer. She asks if hes ever been kissed before and he says no. She kisses him because she wanted his first kiss to be with someone that he loved. -
How Aunt Helen Died
Charlie tells us that his Aunt Helen died on December 24th 1983. This was on his seventh birthday and he had to identify the body as Helen at such a young age with his brother and sister. ¨My aunt Helen was in a terrible accident. It was very snowy. The police officer told my mom that my aunt Helen had passed away" (page 90)
