Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves
This was a federal law that stated that no new slaves were allowed to be imported into the United States. This included all races, but was directed towards African Americans. Approximately 250,000 slaves were imported from 1808-1860 despite this ban on the importation of slaves. -
American Colonization Society Founded
The American Colonization was founded to try to "make things better" for slaves by sending them back to Africa which is unfair to them because they built America both literally and figuratively. America is just as much theirs as it is the slaveholders. -
The Missouri Compromise
The Missouri compromise was an effort made by congress to balance the slave and free states by making Missouri a slave state and making Maine a free state. -
Walker's Appeal Published
Walker's appeal was one of the greatest abolitionist works of the 19th century. It includes the thoughts of unification of African Americans and explains the sins that white Americans are committing by enslaving them. -
Nat Turner's Rebellion
Nat Turner's rebellion was a slave rebellion that was violent and ended up killing around 60 people with at least 51 of those people being white. -
Banning of Black Education in South Carolina
South Carolina bans the education of blacks both enslaved and free within South Carolina's borders. -

Dred Scott Case
Abolitionists file a lawsuit to help Dred Scott gain his freedom. The U.S. Supreme Court didn't act on his trial until 10 years after the lawsuit was brought up. -
The Kansas-Nebraska Act
This Act was put in action to repeal the Missouri Compromise. It also served to allow the people of both Kansas and Nebraska a choice on whether or not to allow slavery in their state borders. -
Arkansas Enslaves Free African Americans
Arkansas slaveholders enslave free African Americans because they refuse to leave the state. -
Seize of Federal Army
On October 16, John Brown and five African Americans tried to seize the federal army in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, but were unsuccessful. -

Civil War Sacrifices
Approximately 200,000 African Americans fought in the Civil War with around 20,000 casualties which were made up of mostly escaped/free slaves. -
Louisiana Native Guard
In 1861, the first and only pro southern independence made up of African Americans was created. This later turned into a group that was part of the United States Army after the Union forces occupy New Orleans in 1862. -
The Emancipation Proclamation
Abraham Lincoln passes the Emancipation Proclamation which legally frees slaves in the Southern states and sparks a kind of new era of reconstruction.
