The Outsiders

  • 1 Pony got jumped by Socs(A)

1 Pony got jumped by Socs(A)
When Ponyboy stepped out of the movie house and went home with no company, he got jumped and a little bit cut up by the Socs, the West-side rich spoiled entitled boys with a sense of superiority who always made fun of the greasers living on the East-side. Luckily, the members of Ponyboy’s gang came to survive him after hearing Pony’s screaming, but they did not catch the Socs.
  • 1 Pony got jumped by Socs(C)

1 Pony got jumped by Socs(C)
Also, the relationship between Pony, Sodapop and Darry: Pony loved Sodapop the most, and he could not accept the way his oldest brother---Darry treated him. With those useful information, we could have a brief understanding about the theme of the story: Pony disliked the distinction of the two groups of the society, and also make an inference of the entire story.
  • 1 Pony got jumped by Socs(B)

1 Pony got jumped by Socs(B)
Finally, the gang gathered together and decided that Dally, Two-Bit, Johnny, and Ponyboy would go to the Nightly Double for a movie at tomorrow night.
In this plot, the author not only described the beginning of the story which had a strong link to the nest, but also used Pony’s side to describe the appearances, characters, especially their eyes of his friends and he always gave us the valuable information such as the background---there was a huge gap between the Socs and the greasers.
  • 2 Johnny stopped Dally from chatting up Cherry(A)

2 Johnny stopped Dally from chatting up Cherry(A)
When Pony, Johnny and Dally got into that theater in an illegal way, they met two Socs girls---Mercia and Cherry. Dally said a lot of awful dirty words loud enough for those girls could heard and felt embarrassed. Then Johnny stopped him. To be specifically, Johnny said:” leave her alone”. After Dally got angry and went away, Pony and Johnny were invited to sit with those Socs’ girls. They chatted and became friends.
  • 2 Johnny stopped Dally from chatting up Cherry(B)

2 Johnny stopped Dally from chatting up Cherry(B)
In this plot, the author showed the special relationship between Johnny and Dally. Basically, if anyone else except Johnny said that to Dally, Dally was no doubt to flatten him. However, Dally could not do so was because Johnny was his pet. Also, it foreshadowed that Johnny’s death led to Dally’s death.
  • 2 Johnny stopped Dally from chatting up Cherry(C)

2 Johnny stopped Dally from chatting up Cherry(C)
In addition, this plot made the character more vivid, and it also indicated us the friendships between Marcia, Johnny, Ponyboy and Cherry, especially between Pony and Cherry can stride across the huge distinction.
  • 3 Discussion about the difference between Socs and greasers(B)

3 Discussion about the difference between Socs and greasers(B)
In this plot, Cherry and Pony had a further discussion. From that, we could clearly be informed that both Socs and greasers had their own thinking modes, and they were unhappy about their life since both of them had their own problems that they did not have approaches to deal with them.
  • 3 Discussion about the difference between Socs and greasers(C)

3 Discussion about the difference between Socs and greasers(C)
Also, at the end of the part, the Socs swore the greasers for picking up their girls, and it seemed that there had a strong smell of gunpowder between the two groups, which led to the big fight between Pony, Johnny and Bob, Randy in the next plot.
  • 3 Discussion about the difference between Socs and greasers(A)

3 Discussion about the difference between Socs and greasers(A)
After the movie was over, Cherry and Pony made a conversation about the difference between the Socs and the greasers. Cherry believed that their set of emotion separated them, but Pony held the opinion that it was just because of rich or poor (money). After talking about Soda and Pony, they met the girls’ boyfriends. Perhaps if Cherry wasn’t here, a fight would occur.
  • 4 Fight between Pony and Darry(A)

4 Fight between Pony and Darry(A)
When they arrived home, Pony and Johnny wanted to stay in the vacant lot and had another smoke. From my point of view, this was just an excuse of recalling what had happened in this special night--- they had been swore by their rival in front of the girl they loved. Unfortunately, Pony fell asleep and went home late, and that made Darry extremely angry, he even beat Pony. With fear and anger, Pony ran out to a park with Johnny.
  • 4 Fight between Pony and Darry(B)

4 Fight between Pony and Darry(B)
From this plot, we can recognize the fight between Pony and Darry finally broke out, which lead to the escape of Pony and foreshadow the fight between Socs and Pony, Johnny when they were in the park in the following plot. From Darry’s side, his striction to Pony originated from love. Perhaps it was an appropriate time for Pony to realize this kind of love. People always cherish the thing they lost.
  • 5 Johnny killed Bob and they started to run away(A)

5 Johnny killed Bob and they started to run away(A)
When Pony and Johnny ran to the park, Bob and several Socs found them, and they were looking for a fight for greasers picking up their girlfriends. Pony was almost drowned because his head was held by Socs and he could not get himself out of water. Johnny was afraid and angry so he used his switchblade to kill Bob accidentally for saving Pony. The two desperate boys seek Dally who found a hideout for them in a nearby town.
  • 5 Johnny killed Bob and they started to run away(B)

5 Johnny killed Bob and they started to run away(B)
This plot is important because it leads to a question that whom to blame for Bob’s death? Johnny should be blame surly, for he was the one actually killed Bob, and Bob should also be blame because he was the one began the fight; however, the society should be blame as well. If they did not have to live on the margins---Socs and greasers, the fight would probably not occur. If they did not fight, Bob would be still alive.
  • 5 Johnny killed Bob and they started to run away(C)

5 Johnny killed Bob and they started to run away(C)
Additionally, Bob’s death made the conflict of the two gangs much more serious than it used to be, and it likes the climax of the story.
  • 6 Their life after they escaped(B)

6 Their life after they escaped(B)
In this plot, the friendship between Johnny and Pony started to be more substantial, and in the mean time, both of them chose to face this nut and took the responsibility of killing Bob altogether. In this part of the story, the author mostly told us about the real life of Pony and Johnny after they escaped. We are inspired by their friendship and it was like a comparison to the Socs’ bland and sophisticated.
  • 6 Their life after they escaped(C)

6 Their life after they escaped(C)
Pony noticed that Johnny extremely admired hero-worship for Dally, this made the relationship between those two more complicated which emphasize their love to each other because they were alike in some field, such as they were both did not have a home and their parents even did not care about them.
  • 6 Their life after they escaped(A)

6 Their life after they escaped(A)
Ponyboy woke up late in the afternoon in the church and could not find Johnny. After waiting for Johnny for their dairy (the two most important one is a copy of Gone with the Wind and peroxide) with fear, Pony had to cut out and blench his lovely silky hire in order not to fit the description from the fuzz on the newspaper as well as Johnny. In the following few days, Pony had found that Johnny was a deep one who could easily understood the novel and the poem, especially “nothing gold can stay”
  • 7 Johnny got badly injured in the fire rescue (B)

7 Johnny got badly injured in the fire rescue (B)
However, saving those kids made Pony, Johnny became heroes. Ponyboy was happily reunited with Darryl and Sodapop in the hospital.
This plot is significant is because this event lead to Johnny’s death, and it shows us being great person is never about whether he or she is rich or not; in other words, poor kids are not always in the bad side, especially Johnny who was brave and full of responsibility. He not only would like to take the responsibility of killing Bob, but also willing to rescue kids
  • 7 Johnny got badly injured in the fire rescue (C)

7 Johnny got badly injured in the fire rescue (C)
Moreover, in this part of the story, Dally prevented twice, once about confessing the crime of Johnny, the other one was whether to save the children. We can recognize that Dally loved Johnny very much, and he tried to use his own way preventing Johnny followed his way in Johnny’s future.
  • 7 Johnny got badly injured in the fire rescue (A)

7 Johnny got badly injured in the fire rescue (A)
After Dally arrived with a letter to Pony from Soda and a piece of news that they got a spy---Cherry, Johnny said he wanted to confess his crime as self-defense so that Pony and Dally would not be implicated. While Dally was trying to change Johnny’ mind on the way back to the church, they saw the church was on fire. A few kids were in that church, so Pony and Johnny jumped into the fire and rescued those kids. Pony escaped safely, but Johnny was not that lucky, he broke his vertebra.
  • 8 Johnny and Pony were on the morning paper of being heroes(B)

8 Johnny and Pony were on the morning paper of being heroes(B)
This plot showed us the reunited of Ponyboy and his friends except Johnny and Dally. Pony and Darry started to go through each other, and he was worried about getting hauled off. From that part, I was touched by their sincere love compared to the Soc’s bland and unemotional, and also admire Pony and Johnny from being heroes.
  • 9 The conversation between Pony and Randy(A)

9 The conversation between Pony and Randy(A)
When Pony and Two-bit were on the road, Pony recognized Marcia’s boyfriend---Randy Adderson. At the beginning, Pony hated them contemptuously was because their fault made Bob die, Johnny get hurt, and Pony and Soda perhaps get put in boy’s home. During this conversation, they exchanged their idea about life, from Bob’s death to the coming rumble. Randy declared that he decided not to join the rumble because it would not do any good. They both had a deeper understanding of each group.
  • 9 The conversation between Pony and Randy(B)

9 The conversation between Pony and Randy(B)
In the plot, both Randy and Pony reached an agreement that the ones in the middle were the actually lucky stiffs, and they started to mutual understanding each other, but the only difficulty was that things are rough all over and they would make no change. I do believe this plot was the second essential one in the entire story except the first conversation between Cherry and Pony. Both of these conversations made the two groups changed their mind of the other group, but only with those few peopl
  • 10 Visiting Dally and Johnny(A)

    10 Visiting Dally and Johnny(A)
Two-Bit and Pony went to the hospital to visit Dally and Johnny. Johnny was suffering from horrible burns, seemingly paralyzed, and he wanted another copy of Gone with the Wind. The visit was very emotional and Johnny became very upset when a nurse told him that his mother came to visit. Johnny didn’t want to see his mother, whom he felt she did not care about him. When he ordered the nurse to send her away, he fainted.
  • 10 Visiting Dally and Johnny(B)

    10 Visiting Dally and Johnny(B)
When Pony and Two-Bit left, they obviously shook by the encounter. When they visited Dally, Dally asked about Johnny and the boys told him the outcome did not look very promising. Dallas was desperate to join the big rumble and asked Two-Bit for his knife as it was a revenge for Johnny's sake.
  • 10 Visiting Dally and Johnny(C)

    10 Visiting Dally and Johnny(C)
In this plot, it showed us the unpromising condition of Johnny, in which foreshadows Johnny’s death and the coming violate rumble. Johnny would not believe that sixteen years was enough for him that he did not encounter something good without the love from their gang. All of what he suffered was homeless, bully and never went somewhere else except Windrixville. We could realize the significance of life and how worthless the coming rumble was.
  • 11 Whether Darry could be a Soc without the gang(A)

11 Whether Darry could be a Soc without the gang(A)
When Pony and Two-bit were going home, they discussed that whether Darry could be a Soc without the gang on the bus, and they all believed that Darry was tough enough and he used his brain. With those factors, Darry could easily become at least not a greaser and went anywhere else. Pony declared that he would be in the rumble and he never played chicken.
  • 11 Whether Darry could be a Soc without the gang(B)

11 Whether Darry could be a Soc without the gang(B)
In this plot, we could easily be touched by Darry’s sense of responsibility and his love to his gang. He chose to sacrifice himself, such as dropped out from university, worked heavily, etc and stayed with them without going outside for a better life. We could say that till this part, Pony had an appropriate understanding of his eldest brother, and finally he was able to think in Darry’s side.
  • 12 Second conversation between Pony and Cherry(A)

12 Second conversation between Pony and Cherry(A)
The Socs and Greasers planned to have a big rumble to settle things. Cherry acted as the go-between, no knives or other weapons were allowed, the fight would only be hand-to-hand. Then, Pony and Cherry had another conversation about Bob, but Pony was mistaken it was a handout because Cherry was sorry for them. In the end, they finally understood they were willing to help each just because they were friends.
  • 12 Second conversation between Pony and Cherry(B)

12 Second conversation between Pony and Cherry(B)
In this plot, it was mainly dialogs. From their chatting, they realized their friendship resulted in the conscious of helping each other. Although they were separated from rich or poor, they could also watch the same beautiful sunset, and their heart could also be linked.
  • 13 The rumble between Socs and greasers(A)

13 The rumble between Socs and greasers(A)
On the night of the rumble, Ponyboy asked almost everyone in his gang whether they would like fights. Although the answers were various, Pony was the only one in his gang except Johnny understood that the rumble was worth nothing. Pony wanted to join, and Darry reluctantly let him participate, telling he and Soda to run from the fight if the cops arrived. The Socs arrived and the big rumble got underway as the groups pair off and started slugging.
  • 13 The rumble between Socs and greasers

13 The rumble between Socs and greasers
The reason why the rumble was worthless was because whether which group won, it would not make any change: Socs were still Socs, greasers were still greasers, which made the theme more completed.
  • 14 Johnny’s death(A)

    14 Johnny’s death(A)
Just before the first punch was thrown, Dally arrived. When the fight ended, Dally grabbed Pony and they drove to the hospital to see Johnny, who was weaker than ever. On the way, Dally told Pony to stay tough like him and nothing will ever phase him. When they arrive, Dally told Johnny that the Socs had been driven out of their territory for good. Johnny seemed not to care and told Pony to "stay gold". He died and Dallas became incredibly upset.
  • 14 Johnny’s death(B)

    14 Johnny’s death(B)
In this plot, I am sorry to read about Johnny’s death. Because of Dally’s special love to Johnny, he would blame himself for not let be cold-blooded in order to protect himself, and he also lose his control of emotions, which lead to his death. Also, Johnny said “stay gold” to Pony, to exhort Pony that although he had gone, and they would not deal with this difficulty at present, Pony still should be a good boy like he was before, and cherish his life. That showed their wonderful friendship.
  • 15 Dally’s death

    15 Dally’s death
In this plot, Dally got what he wanted---to finish his desperate life with Johnny, his pet he loved forever. He died gallant even if nobody else except the gang would treat him as a hero, but till now, the character of Dally was fully presented to us: sometimes he was cold-blooded and violate, but most of time when his friends were in trouble, he was able to help them at the first time.
  • 15 Dally’s death

    15 Dally’s death
If I were Pony, it was my pleasure to have a friend like Dally. We could finally find the theme of the story: even both Socs and greasers did not like and have no ways to overcome the distinction between them, but from Pony’s side, his life was also bright and full of hope with love from his friends. If everyone has the attitude of staying gold, this issue would be likely to solve easily in the future.
  • 8 Johnny and Pony were on the morning paper of being heroes(A)

8 Johnny and Pony were on the morning paper of being heroes(A)
Pony went home with his two elder brothers after the interview of him from being a hero, while Dally and Johnny had to live in the hospital, particularly Johnny, who was in severe shock and suffering from third-degree burns. The next day morning, Pony reunited with his friends and had a look about his stories covered the whole page. The story was mainly about how the juvenile court was going to execute him and Johnny.
  • 13 The rumble between Socs and greasers(B)

13 The rumble between Socs and greasers(B)
In this plot, the most direct conflict between Socs and greasers occurred, not like the one happened before but this one occurred with the two whole group. Also, it was where Pony got most frustrated because he knew this rumble was worthless, but he had to join for revenge for Johnny and he could not want to be a coward.
  • 15 Dally's death

    15 Dally's death
Pony headed home to find Darry and the rest of the gang were nursing their wounds. Pony told them that Johnny died and Dally left in a fury. Pony was worried Dally would have a meltdown. Dally robbed a corner store and called Pony's house, asking for a place to hide from the police. The cops chased him and shot him in a nearby lot when he waved the unloaded gun at them. His friends arrived just before he died; his last word was "Pony". Pony fainted from his exhaustion.
  • 16 Another conversation with Randy(A)

Pony was resting at home when Randy came to visit him, and Pony did not mind Randy seeing the poor looking of his family. Randy was here telling Pony that his father would like him to tell the truth. During this conversation, they were on each other’s way to think for each other, and Ponyboy mentioned several times that it is him that killed Bob not Johnny. At the trial, Cherry gave her testimony and Ponyboy was declared not guilty. They were all happy.
  • 16 Another conversation with Randy(B)

In this plot, the novel was moving to the end which gave us the relatively modest relationship between Socs and greasers. From my point of view, Pony really treated Randy as his friends whom he even would not want to hide his family condition, and Pony did not want others to believe Johnny was a murder because Johnny was the hero in Pony’s heart forever. After the trail, Pony would no longer worry about separating from his brothers; he would live his life as Johnny’s last words: stay gold.
  • 17 The Curtis hold together and never separate apart(B)

17 The Curtis hold together and never separate apart(B)
At home, after reading the letter left by Johnny which encouraged him to cherish his time to do the things he wanted and always be optimistic, he began to write his story, starting with the moment he left the movie theater to remind his friends.
  • 17 The Curtis hold together and never separate apart(C)

17 The Curtis hold together and never separate apart(C)
In this plot, the novel finally finished, and all the plots now showed to us are optimistic and pleasant. I understood that the way Pony grew up was just like us--- learn to find and enjoy beautiful things in our life and never abandon yourself. We should keep a grateful heart all the time and always be positive to our life, because no matter how this world treats you unfairly, there must be someone loves you, helps you, encourages you…
  • 17 The Curtis hold together and never separate apart(A)

17 The Curtis hold together and never separate apart(A)
At home Darry rode Ponyboy, Sodapop ran off into the night. The three brothers gathered together and Sodapop told Darry to stop being so hard on Ponyboy, the three only had each other and they all needed to get along. They finally started to think in other’s side and had a group hug then returned home. Backed to school, Ponyboy was now neatly dressed and coiffed, and a teacher gave him another chance to finish his assignment for passing English.
