The First Beating
Johnny, the wimpiest Greaser in the beginning of the book, gets a good beating in by the Socs. He is really upset that he can't fend for himself, and they almost kill him when he was beaten. His friends are all worried for him in the future and always try to be there when ever he gets jumped, but it's usually too late. -
Cherry
Ponyboy, Johnny, and Darry go to a drive in. When Darry is being mean to Cherry and her friend, Johnny steps in and shows his first sign of bravery- since everyone other than Johnny would get beat on if they stood up to Darry. -
Ponyboy and Johnny run away (1)
After coming back to the house so late at night, Darry couldn't take it anymore and hit Ponyboy. Ponyboy had enough of this, and ran away into a park with Johnny. -
Johnny kills Bob
While at the park, Ponyboy and Johnny get jumped by drunk greasers. One, named Bob, is drowning Ponyboy, while Johnny just stood there watching until eventually he kills Bob with a knife. This is the second sign of bravery for Johnny. -
Ponyboby and Johnny run away (2)
After killing Bob, Ponyoboy and Johnny run away to a church in a town called Windrixville and have to live on mainly ham and other cheap foods. -
Church Burning
After coming back from Dairy Queen, a teacher loses some students during a field trip, only to find out that they are in the church, which had been set on fire. -
Johnny and Ponyboy save the kids
Ponyboy and Johnny run into the Church after they realized the 2 missing students were in the burning church. They run through as heroes. Ponyboy jumps out of the window, along with the children, but Johnny gets stuck and is hit by debris causing him to suffer permanent spine injuries. -
Johnny in the Hospital
After getting hit by debris, Johnny is in the hospital slowly dying. His friends visit him every day to remind him of how important he was to keep them all together and not fight constantly. -
The Rumble
The Greasers and Socs have an all out gang war in a parking lot. The fight doesn't begin until the 2 strongest fighters, Darry and his high school friend Paul, take a swing. The fight is interrupted by someone yelling Darry's name, where Paul then strikes. -
The Outcome
Ponyboy and Sodapop fight together, where they save each other multiple times. The Greasers, with support from Shepard's gang, win the fight. To celebrate, they go to see Johnny at the hospital and tell him all about the rumble -
Johhny Dies
The gang go to see Johnny, but he is dying. They tell him about the rumble. Johnny gives Ponyboy a book called The Giver, which is what they read to pass time while hiding in the church. Ponyboy takes his gift. There was a note inside that tells Darry to not be worried, which at the time Ponyboy read it, he had already died due to assisted suicide where he aggravated the cops enough for them to shoot him.
