The Iliad, another epic, plays part in the Odysseus story. In the great battle of Troy, Odysseus came up with the idea to send a giant wooden horse as a gift to the Trojans. Soldiers would hide in the stomach of the horse, and then attack when the gates were opened. Image Source

Odysseus and his men stopped at the island of the Lotus Eaters, a group of people who ate nothing but lotus's. His men were so enchanted that they never wanted to leave. Odysseus had to force his crew to leave the island. Lotuses made the Odyssey's crew calm and sleepy. image source

Aeolia was the island of the wind god Aeolus. He was very kind to Odysseus, and gave him a bag full of wind. He instructed them not to open it until they got back to Ithaca. Odysseus's men were curious, and opened the bag. The released wind blew them all the way back to Aeolia. image source

Telepylos was the land of the Laestrygonian giants. This island was very brutal, and the three men whom Odysseus sent as scouts were eaten alive. The remaining greeks fled for the ships, 11 of which were smashed by the giants. image source

Odysseus sent men here to find food and water. The islands witch, Circe, drugged the water, so they turned into pigs. Odysseus heard this news, and tried to convince her to restore his men. The Underworld
Circe told them to find Tiresias, who would give them useful advice. Odysseus journeys here himself. In order to find Tiresias, he had to sacrifice many animals and fight off evil spirits. Tiresias gave him the advice that he needed. He also found his mother's spirit, and found out how she died. image source

Circe had warned Odysseus about the Sirens and their songs. The Sirens would lure ships to crash into the craggy rocks. He stuffed beeswax into his crew's ears and tied himself to a pole in order to restrain himself as he heard their song as his ship passed by their island. image source

To get home, Odysseus had to pass through the Strait of Messina. On one side of the strait was Scylla, a women with six dragon heads. On the other side was Charybdis, the whirlpool monster. Odysseus chose the side with Scylla, and distracted her by throwing sheep onto the cliff. image source

The island of Helios
The island of Helios is home to the Titan's famous cattle. Circe warned them not to eat a single cattle, or all but Odysseus will die. A bad storm maroons them, and after much deliberation, they eat a cow. When sailing home, a storm sends their ship back to Scylla and Charybdis, where all but Odysseus is eaten. The Calypsos prison of Ogygia is where Odysseus finds himself next. Calypso is a beautiful goddess who manages to keep him on Ogygia for 8 years. Hermes was sent by the gods to force Odysseus off of the island. image source
