Missouri compromise
The Missouri compromise of 1820 maintained a balance between slave and free states. Maine was now a free state and missouri a slave state. A line was drawn to end any future debate over slavery. -

A crisis that occured during president jacksons presidency. This crisis involved south carolina believing they could nullify any fedaeral law, if the circumsances permitted. -
Mexican cession/Mexican war
Mexican war- the US army invades and captures new mexico and california. Then, invades mexico city and forces the mexicans to surrender. The war was fought over border disputes. Mexican cession- it gave the US the california and new mexico territories to the US for 15 million dollars. -
compromise of 1850
This compromise, created by henry clay stated that california would be admitted as a free state, and the slave trade would be abolished in washington D.C. However, it also enacted the fugitive slave law and made the territories of new mexico and utah decide their take on slavery by majority vote. -
uncle toms cabin
Harriet beecher stowe wrote uncle tom's cabin in 1852 to portray the apparant enormity of slavery. This ground-breaking novel heightened the conflict between the north and south. -
kansas-nebraska act
This act created the territories of kansas and nebraska. It also allowed the citizens of these new territories to decide slavery within their own territory. It also repealed the 36-30 line of the missouri compromise. -

Bleeding Kansas
Proslaver and antislavery members rushed into kansas to vote on its behalf. Proslavery forces won, causing the antislavery members to boycott and create their own government. A proslavery mob then attacked lawrance, kansas, killing antislavery members. -

Congressman brooks attacked senator sumner for making rude comments against his cousin. -
dredd scott case
Slave, dred scott decided to sue his master for keeping his as a slave even though he has spent years in the free states. Astoundingly, this made it to the supreme court. The supreme court ruled african-americans were not citizens and had no rights. -
lincoln-douglas debates
In these debates between abraham lincoln and stephen douglas, lincoln gave his famous "house divided" speech. Lincoln made a name for himself and his party. He also imparted his idea of stopping the spread of slavery. -
Harpers ferry attack
John Brown attacked a US marine arsenal to capture weapons and supply a slave revolt. Browns's attack failed, and he was captured and hanged for murder and treason. -
election of 1860
In this race against three other primary candidates, republican abraham lincoln won and became president. South carolina along with a number of other states secceded in result. -
South Carolina Secedes
South carolina seceeded from the union, for president lincoln was elected. -
begginning of the civil war
Southern forces bombard a northern fort in the south. No casualties were had, but this was said to be the "bloodless start to the bloodiest war".
