Wilmot Proviso
The Wilmot Proviso was aimed to outlaw slavery in the territories taken from Mexico. Wilmot Proviso was passed in the House of Representatives but was defeated in the senate thus causing a division in congress. Although, it was not a success, it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party. -
Compromise of 1850
California could not gain state hood, howerer without the aproval of congress. By the end of September, Douglas succceded. The plan now known as the compromise of 1850 became a law. -
