Wilmot Proviso
This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House of Representitives but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a division in Congress. Altough, not a success it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party. -
Compromise of 1850
The Compromise promised California would be admitted as a free state and slave trade would be abolished in Washington D.C. and congress would not pass laws regarding slaves in the territory won from Mexico. There would also be stronger laws to capture runaway slaves. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Popular sovereighty will be used in the new Nebraska Kansas territory. this means the people who live there will be able to vote if they want slavery or not. It abloished the law of the Missouri Compromise. -
"Bleeding Kansas"
Pro-slavery nd anti-slavery rushed to Kansas to vote wether or not to allow slavery in the new territory.John Brown and several other men went to several of there neighbors houses and murderd five people. -
Caning of Sumner
Sumner made fun of A.P Butler ,a senetor from south Carolina. Preston Brooks a relative of Butler beat sumner with a cane as revenge for his relative. Many southeners cheered Brooks. -
Dred Scott v. Sandford
Dred Scott, a slave in Missouri,sued for freedom after visiting a free state with his master.He sued after his previous master died . After the case was over Dred Scott was till a slave and all blacks were not considered citizens. -
Attack on Harpers Ferry
John Brown wanted to inspire slaves to fight back. He planned an attack on the U.S arsenal to arm slaves and have them fight for their freedom.No slaves showed up. -
Election of 1860
Lincoln and Douglas were the only canidates with much support from the south. Beckinridge and Bell were competeing for southern votes. The south seceded or withdrwed from the union after Lincoln won the election
