This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passes in the Hoise of Representatives but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a division in Congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party. -

Comprimise of 1850
Behind the scenes, statesman sought comprimise. Taking the lead was senator Henry Clay of Kentucky. Clay had helped create the Missouri Comprimise in 1820. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
It divided Kansas and Nebraska. Senator Stephen A. Douglas of Illanois drafted a bill to organise territorial fovernment for the Nebraska Territory. The bill was passes and now is a law. -
Bleeding Kansas
Proslavery and antislavery hurry into Kansas to vote for the territorial legislation. Missourians vote in the election illegally. Because of that the official Kansas legislative was packed with proslavery representatives. -
Caning of Sumner
Senator Charlers Sumner's speech attacks proslavery forces in Kansas & makes fun of A.P Butler. A relative of Butler (Preston Brooks) is offended and attacks Sumner in the senate. -
Dred Scott V. Stanford
Dred Scott takes his case all the way to the seupreme court. Result of the case: Allows slavery to spread anywhere in the U,S territory. -
Attack on Harpers Ferry
In 1859, John Brown planned to capture weapons in the U.S arsenal at Harpers Ferry. He wanted to inspire slaves to fight for their freedom. No slaves joined the fight, Brown and 6 others where captured and 10 where killed. -
Election of 1860
Abraham Lincoln wins the election of 1860 because he recieved the most electoral votes. As a result of this election, South Carolina and the 6 other Southern States decide to secede from the union soon after they form the confederate States of America.
