WILMOT PROVISO
This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House of Representatives but was defeated in the senate thus causing a division in Congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party. -

KANSAS-NEBRASKA ACT
The Kansas-Nebraska Act was a law that established the territories of Kansas ans Nebraska. It also gave their residents the right to decide whether to allow slavery or not. -

In 1856, Senator Charles Sumner delivered a speech packed with insults. He even made fun of A.P. Butler, the senator of South Carolina. After hearing about about the speech, Preston Brooks, a relative of Butler, attacked Sumner with a cane! -
DRED SCOTT V. SANDFORD
Dred Scott who was a slave, sued for his freedom becase he had been taken to live in the territories where slavery was illegal. the court ruled against Scott. -
ATTACK ON HARPERS FERRY
James Brown wanted to inspire his slaves to fight for their freedom. to do that, he planned to capture the weapons in the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry, and he did. -
ELECTION OF 1860
Lincoln and Douglas had support from the North, but Breckinridge and Bell had all of the South. In the end, Lincoln won the election because he was fit for the job and the North's population was greater than the South's.
