  • Wilmot Proviso

    This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territores taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House od Representitives but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a division in Congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party.
  • Compromise of 1850

    The compromise of 1850 was a bunch of laws made by congress to settle a dispute between free and slave states, They made multiple laws. Half were in the South's favor, and the other half was in the North's.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    This bill was made to act as a way to organize the government in Nebraska territory, splitting it into Kansas and Nebraska. This bill got rid of the Missouri compromise. The Southerners supported the bill for that reason, it passed.
  • "Bleeding Kansas"

    When everyone packed into Kansas for the slavery poll, problems started breaking out. The proslavery people had 5,000 people come and voted illegally. Pro slavery mobbed Lawerance, Kansas. In return (payback) John Brown and seven others murdered five people.
  • Caning of Sumner

    Sumner insulted proslavery people in his speech too many times, giving direct insults to A.P Butler. Preston Brooks, a relative of Butler, heard about Sumner insulting his relative, and he got very mad. He went up to him and hit him with a cane thirty times. The result of all of this violence, were slogans for a new political party soon to come.
  • Dred Scott v. Sanford

    Dred Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom. His case finally ended up in the supreme court in 1857. The court ruled against Scott.
  • Attack on Harper's Ferry

    John Harper and his eighteen followers stole the Harper's Ferry arsenal supply of weapons. The U.S. Marines sentenced Harper to be hung and killed six of his men.
  • Election Of 1860

    During the election of 1860, Lincoln ran for Repunlicans, Stephan A. Douglas for for Democrats, and John Bell for Consitutional party. Lincoln won most of North, Douglas won most of in between, and Douglas vice. Bell won most of south.
