Wilmot Proviso
This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House of Representatives but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a divison in Congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party. -

Compromise of 1850
California could not gain statehood, however with out the aproval of the Congress, taking the lead was Henry Clay. By the end of the September, Douglas succeeded, and the compromise became a law. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Established the territories of Nebraska and Kansas and gave their residents the right to decide whether to aloow slavery. -
"Bleeding Kansas"
Attacks such as the Sack of Laurence and Pottawomie Massacre occured and Civil Was soon took place. The territory came to be called, "Bleeding Kansas". -
Caning of Sumner
Sumner gave many insults. Preston Brooks heard about the speech and attacked Sumner by hitting his head with a cane. -
Dred Scott vs. Sanford
Dred Scott was sued in the Supreme Court. He was sued for his freedom because he had been taken to live in territories where slavery was not legal. The court ruled against Scott. -
Attack on Harpers Ferry
John Brown wanted slaves to fight for their freedom. Him, along with eighteen followers captured the Harpers Ferry Arsenal, killing four peoplein the raid. Brown and six other men got captured. Brown was sendenced to hang. -
Election of 1860
Turned to two different races for presidency from the Norht and South LIncoln won the election.
