This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House of Represenative but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a division in Congress. Althought, not a success it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party. -
Compromise
To make the North happy California would be admitted as a free state and slave trade would be abolish in Washington D.C. To make the south happy congress would pass a stronger law to help recapture slavery. -
kansas Nebraska Act

Dred had been a slave in Missouri. He argued that he is a free man because he lived in territories were slavery was illegal. Dred Scott V. Sandford reacted to the supreme court in 1856. -
