  • compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850 was created by Henry Clay, the Creator of the Missuri Compromise.It was created to make the south and north be at an agreement about the issue of slavery.It stated that to please the south, Congress would not pass laws regarding slavery for the rest of the land won from Mexico, and Congress would pass stronger laws to help capture runaway slaves.to please the north, California would be admitted as a free state, and slave trade would stop in washington,D.C.
  • The Kansas and Nebraska Act

    In 1854,Senator Douglass drafted a bill to divide Nebraska into two territories,Nebraska and Kansas. Popular soverighnty decided whether they were slave states or not, which rendered the Missouri compromise useless. Southerners repealed the Missouri compromise, and the kansas-Nebraska act was passed.

    Proslavery and antislavery settlers came to Kansas to vote for territorial legislature, so 5,000 came and voted illegally. Mobs broke out and sstarted fighting each other. Thon Brown, an extreme abolitionist, attacked and killed 5 people, along with raiding a gunshed.

    In 1856,senator Sumner delivered a speech attacking the proslavery forces in Kansas. Preston Brooks, a proslavery activist, defended the South and attacked Sumner.He beat Sumner with his cane until his cane broke.
  • dredd Scott vs. Standford

    Scott had been a slave in Missuri. His owner took him to a place where slavery was illegal, then went back to their home. After his owner's death, he sued for his freedom,and lost. Congress said that since a slave was property, then property couldn't sue for freedom.Because Congress turned him down,it led abolitionists to riot.
  • Attack on Harper's ferry

    Jhon Brown attacked Harper's ferry and,because he was an extreme abolitionist, stole all of the ferry's guns and sent his men to rally and arm local slaves. His plan was to have the slaves overthrow their masters, and free more slaves. The slaves did'nt come, and Jhon Brown, including his five sons, all died when they attacked the ferry.

    There were two different races for presidency,one in the North, and one in the South.Lincoln and Douglass ran in the North, and Brickenridge and Bell ran in the South. Lincoln won,which caused the secession of Southern states. Contrary to popular beleif, Lincoln did not want to end slavery in the South. He only wanted it to not be expanded in the territories won from Mexico.
