Wilmot Proviso
This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House Of Representstives but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a division in Congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party. -
Compromise Of 1850
Laws intended to settle the major disagreements between free states and slave states. the making of new territories became a problem because people thought there would be a huge expansion in slavery. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
It allowed the people who lived in kansas and nebraska to vote whether or not they wanted to allow slavery there. When the voting took place, people in the south that wanted slavery rushed into Kansas and Nebraska to vote in favor of slavery. Slavery won the election, but people got mad and said that it was a fraud. So, the election took place again, but the same thing happend. So, Kansas and Nebraska were not admitted as states. Later Anti-slavery people outnumbered pro-slavery. -

Proslavery and antislavery settlers rushed into the Kansas territory to vote for territorial legislature. there were more pro slavery settlers than anti slavery settlers in the territory. proslavery people attacket Lawrnece, Kansas. they destroyed the house of the governeor of the antislavery government. -
Caning Of Sumner
Brooks hit Sumner 30 times or more. Brooks broke his cane. Many southerner's cheered Brooks on, but most northerners were shocked at the violence at the Senate. "Bleeding Sumner" became cries for anti slavery northerners. -
