Greek Philosopher Democritus (400 BC)
The first astronomer to have fully explained the Milky Way. He explained that the Milky Way was the light of stars reaching our view from Earth. Also, that the Milky Way may have other planets that could possibly have life. "Milky Way." The Gale Encyclopedia of Science. Ed. K. Lee Lerner and Brenda Wilmoth Lerner. 4th ed. Detroit: Gale, 2008. Galileao Gillilei discovers the Milky Way
While observing through his very own telescope, he discoved the Milky Way Galaxy. He discovered that the Milky Way was made up of millions of individual stars. "Milky Way." German Philosopher Immanuel Kant explains his theory
He suggested that the Milky Way was a "lens-shaped group of stars" and that others were like it. He also thought that parts of the Milky Way were actually other more distant galaxies. "Galaxies." English Astronomer William Herschel
He correctly found a way to count the stars in the Milky Way in an attempt to find the structure of the Milky Way. "Milky Way." The Gale Encyclopedia of Science. Ed. K. Lee Lerner and Brenda Wilmoth Lerner. 4th ed. Detroit: Gale, 2008. "Cool Cosmos." Cool Cosmos. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Dec. 2013. -
American Astronomer Harlow Shapley
Mapped the Milky Way by counting global clusters, a different method then counting stars. He also found out that one global cluster consits of 100,000 stars. "Milky Way." The Gale Encyclopedia of Science. Ed. K. Lee Lerner and Brenda Wilmoth Lerner. 4th ed. Detroit: Gale,

American Astronomer Edwin Powell Hubble
While using 100in telescope at Mt. Wilson Observatory he discovered that a group of stars that was thought to be part of the MIlky Way was really part of a neighboring galaxy. Its called Andromeda Galaxy. "Milky Way." The Gale Encyclopedia of Science. Ed. K. Lee Lerner and Brenda Wilmoth Lerner. 4th ed. Detroit: Gale, 2008. Science in Context. Web. 12 Dec. 2013. Astronomers studies the Milky Way more in depth
Astronomers study the orbital motions and its outer stars in an attempt to find the mass of the Milky Way. The estimated mass is about 600,000,000,000 to 3 trillion times the mass of the sun. Based on research in 2005, the Milky Way is about 13.6 billion years old. "Milky Way." The Gale Encyclopedia of Science. Ed. K. Lee Lerner and Brenda Wilmoth Lerner. 4th ed. Detroit: Gale,
