Thomas wakes up in the Box in the Glade knowing only his name.
He remembers nothing else about his life. -
Thomas meets the other boys who live in the Glade - Alby, the leader, and Newt, the second in command. He makes friends with Chuck. Thomas learns how the Glade is run and that every night the giant walls/doors surrounding them that lead to the maze, close.

Thomas Is warned never to go into the maze because of the monsters called Grievers who live in it. He also learns that the “Changing” occurs when a person gets stung by a Griever and they experience flashbacks into their pasts.

The box arrives with the first girl ever to join the Gladers. She informs them that everything is going to change and drops a note that says “she’s the last one …. ever”

Thomas realises that the girl and the maze look familiar to him.

A runner named Minho reports that he has spotted a dead griever.

Thomas announces that he wants to be a runner.

Thomas discovers that it is possible to defeat the grievers when he saves Alby and Minho after they are stuck in the Maze overnight. They are the first to survive a night in the Maze.

Teresa is in a coma in the infirmary and when Thomas visits her, he can hear her voice in his head.

Although it is not customary for a newbie to become a Runner, Thomas does so. He makes friends with Minho.

During a day in the Maze, Thomas and Minho see a Griever jump off a cliff and disappear. They return and make a map of the Maze in the map room.

Thomas hears Teresa’s voice again. This time she tells him that she has triggered the ending.

The doors to the Maze do not close one night and the Grievers invade the Glade.

Thomas proposes spending a night in the Maze again to research the Grievers.

Thomas allows himself to be stung by a Griever and go through the Changing. When he wakes up he tells the others that they can escape through the Griever Hole.

Teresa and Thomas work together to decipher the Maze's code.

Thomas helps Alby and Newt lead the boys to their escape.

When they enter the WICKED lab Chuck sacrifices himself to save Thomas.

The Gladers are rescued from WICKED and taken to a large building where they are fed and given comfortable beds to sleep in. However, uncertainty surrounds their safety.

Minho and Thomas discover the letters on the walls of the Maze spell words.
