The Ares 3 mission launches from Earth. The crew board Hermes, an ion-drive spacecraft that takes them to Mars. -
First day on Mars
The Ares 3 Mars Descent Vehicle (MDV) lands on Mars -
Sandstorm
A huge sandstorm threatend to knock over the Ares 3 Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV), forcing the crew to abort the mission and return to their camp. Mark Watney got struck by the sandstorm, presumed dead, and abandoned by the rest of the crew. He starts to record his first log entry as inhabitant of Mars. -
Longing
Watney starts to wonder how his kids are doing. Suddently he realizes he could be stuck on Mars forever, and never see his family agian. -
Farming
Watney started a potato farm, and he also started producing water for this farm by reducing hydrazine, he then proceeds to fill the room with hydrogen, and nearly kills himself trying to safely burn it off when a hydroghen explosion occurs. -
There are still hope
Mindy Park at SatCon discovers evidence that Watney still could be alive. -
Hello Earth
Watney heads out on a trip to "Ares Vallis" to salvage the Pathfinder and Soujourner, two robots who had gatherd information on Mars, nearly 39 years after NASA lost contact with them. He then accomplishes to make contact with Earth using Pathfinder. -
No rescue mission
NASA finally decides to inform the rest of the Ares 3 crew that Watney is still alive. The crew want to rescue Watney, but are not allowed because it is too dangerous. -
No more potato for you
The canvas connecting the airlock to the main room breaches, blowing the entire airlock (with Watney in it) several meters away. When he comes back, he finds out that the decompression had killed his potato farm, leaving his crops edible but they can not be used for future farming. He calculated that his food supply will run out in 600 days. -
Iris
NASA launches Iris, a supply robot scheduled to arrive on Mars in 414 days. The launch fails due to the rushed work and lack of inspection required to meet the tight schedule. -
Epic Slingshot
Watney is informed that Hermes (The space station) will execute “the Rich Purnell maneuver” to slingshot around Earth and perform a Mars flyby to rescue him. Watney begins preparations to travel to Schiaparelli Crater, where he can launch the Ares 4 MAV to meet Hermes. -
Technical difficulties
During preparations to meet the Hermes flyby, Watney accidentally causes a power overload in Pathfinder, his only working radio, and therefore looses contact with Earth. -
Second Attempt
NASA coordinates with the Chinese National Space Agency to launch the Iris 2 supply robot with a Chinese rocket booster. Hermes successfully picks up the robot on its way around Earth back to Mars. -
Saved by Hermes
Watney leaves Acidalia Planitia for the final time, taking all the equipment he needs to reach Schiaparelli Crater. He arrives at the Ares 4 MAV and reestablishes contact with NASA, which instructs him on how to reconfigure the ship. The Hermes flies by Mars. The Ares 4 MAV gets launched into space, and Watney gets out of the MAV and aboard Hermes. -
Safe back home
The day that the Ares 3 crew returns to Earth.
