Ferdinand Marcos Won His First Election
Ferdinand Marcos won the election and was elected as the 10th president of the Philippines, a ruined but barely functioning democratic country. He was 65 years old during that time period and was already a lawyer and an elated senator which made him “perfect” or fit for the role which is why he won the election as he is seen as a good, responsible, and smart guy. His term lasted for 8 years (1965-1972.) -
Ferdinand Marcos Got Re-Elected As President
Marcos was the first-ever president to get re-elected as president and got another term in the palace with his current position. This election caused chaos and commotion in the country because of his recent scandals and cases of electoral fraud. -
The Battle Of Mendiola
The Battle of Mendiola had occurred this day. Students from different universities and schools attempted to raid and attack the Malacanang Palace to show their rebellion against the demonstration, especially to the laws that Marcos had implemented. Four students were injured and it was essentially a riot against the police since they were the ones assigned to guard the palace. -
First Constitutional Convention
The First Constitutional Convention took place wherein Marcos took this time to tell the people in the government that he wanted to have a third term presidency. This is because he knew what power he had as the president of the country and wanted the to country having that power for as much time as possible. But, the majority of the parliament declined his request as most of them knew that he was using his position to do commit corruption and essentially use it for his good. -

This is the day wherein the lives of millions of Filipinos changed forever because this is the day that Marcos declared martial law in the entire Philippines. This gave him more power to control quite literally anything he wanted to do with the people, laws, and alike. Marcos justified his reasoning as to why he declared martial law because of the threats that are given by the Communists and Muslim groups that rebelled against the government. -

The Philippine Constitution Plebiscite Of 1973 was ratified, which gave Marcos more power and he assumed dictatorial powers under the newly ratified constitution. He used his powers to take out and arrest the people of the opposition. He specifically arrested Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino and Jose Diokno that were the leaders of the opposition of the government. -
The 1976 Tripoli Agreement
The 1976 Tripoli Agreement had happened between two people wherein Imelda Maros made an agreement between Libya to stop funding and giving support to the group Nur Misuari and the Moro National Liberation Front who are both opposing and is fighting against Marcos. This agreement benefited the Marcos family, specifically Ferdinand Marcos, as he became allies with one of his ex-enemies that also helped him win the election in the upcoming future. -
Ninoy Aquino Is Sent To The US For Heart Surgery
Ninoy Aquino is sent to the US for Heart Surgery that was permitted by Ferdinand Marcos himself. He had to go to the US to recover from his sickness and had to undergo heart surgery there since the best facilities for him are found there, the surgery was successful. This event is key to take note of in the future. -
Ferdinand Marcos Won The Election Again
Ferdinand Marcos won the election again by a landslide of approximately 18 million votes as the opposition withdrawn from the election which gave the citizens no one to vote for but Marcos only. This was also the time when the Martial Law was lifted as it was seen as something that brought more bad than good which they should have seen before. -

The Confetti Revolution happened around this time which was centered on rallying, and generally speaking out against the Marcos regime and government that were continually doing corrupt practices that led to the downfall of both the national and economic status which caused chaos in the entire country. According to government records, the gross domestic product (GDP) reached historic highs during the start of the implementation of martial law it climbed to annual growth of 8.8 percent in 1976. -

But, these “achievements” that the law has done to the GDP was “short-lived” because the economy plummeted to record low levels of up to -7.3 percent towards the regime of Marcos eight years later. This was also because of the many infrastructures that happened during the Marcos administration that caused external debt to the government which was proven in the 1980s when the government could no longer supply and build more structures because of their growing debt. -

It just shows how corruption will affect the people, and the economy as well because of how greedy the Marcos’ family were during their regime which is why the economy declined because they kept the government’s funds to themselves. A good example is the shoe collection of Imelda Marcos which showcased up to 3000 shoes. It is truly a fact that she does not need all those pairs of shoes, why not use the money for the people in the slums that truly needs the money and help. -
Ninoy Aquino Was Assassinated
This was the day when Ninoy Aquino was assassinated when he arrived in the Philippines through the Philippines National Airport. He got shot as soon he got off the plane, which made the whole nation both shocked and mad. Marcos and his army, especially her wife Imelda Marcos, were blamed for the alleged staged assassination of Aquino, but there is still no justice up to this day of the issue which is truly saddening because it was clear that it was part of Marcos’ plan but no action was made. -

Ferdinand Marcos called for Snap Elections because he knew that the US started to break their relations with each other which is why he had to do this so that his power and money still remained within him. When the votes were counted, Marcos is officially declared as the candidate with higher votes.
But, there were allegations of electoral fraud and illegal tampering of votes which also sparked the People’s Power Revolution that was disputed by the Aquinos which is his rival in the election. -

The army withdrew their support on Marcos which made him leave the country and flee to Hawaii with his family. This automatically made Corazon Aquino the winner of the elections and therefore is ruled as the President of the Philippines. This event was also important for the People’s Power Revolution as the action was actually done with no violence involved and it succeeded. His regime full of corruption and violence was finally over and a new era begins.
