Albert Einstein and Enrico Fermi flee to the United States
German scientists discover how to split uranium atoms, enabling them to build a bomb of unspeakable destruction. Einstein and Fermi flee Germany and Italy respectively, and come to the US. -
Informing the President
Einstein and Fermi agree that they need to inform President Roosevelt of the dangers of the Atomic Bomb. Einstein writes a letter to President Roosevelt explaining his concerns about America's lack of nuclear research or determination. Roosevelt provides minimal funding and allows them to start their research on the topic, calling it the Manhattan Project. -
The Manhattan Project Starts
The American effort to design and build an atomic bomb starts, and receives its code name, the Manhattan Project. -
First Chain Reaction
Fermi leads a group of scientists in creating the first controlled nuclear chain reaction, at the University of Chicago. -
First Assembly Plant
The first bomb assembly plant is made in Los Alamos, New Mexico. This would serve as the location where the first atomic bomb would be built. -
First Test
At Trinity Site near Alamogordo, New Mexico, Oppenheimer tests the worlds first ever nuclear bomb. Effects:
-Flash seen from up to 200 miles away
-Mushroom cloud 40,000 feet high
-Windows blown out 100 miles away
-Half-mile diameter crater in the ground -
First Atomic Bomb used in War
An American B-29 bomber dropped the first ever nuclear bomb used in war on Hiroshima, Japan. It killed 90% of the city's population instantly, with many more dying later from radiation exposure.
