Reed Hastings was born October 8, 1960 in Boston Massachusetts, United States. To parents Joan Amory and Wilmot Reed Hastings. -
Joins the Peace Corps
Hastings joined the Peace Corps after graduating from Bowdoin College "out of a combination of service and adventure". -
Taught math in Swaziland
He went to teach high school math in Swaziland from 1983 to 1985. Hastings credits part of his entrepreneurial spirit to his time in the Peace Corps. "Once you have hitchhiked across Africa with ten bucks in your pocket, starting a business doesn't seem too intimidating." -
Attended and graduated from Stanford University
After returning from the Peace Corps, Hastings went on to attend Stanford University. He graduated in 1988 with a master's degree in computer science. -
Left to create his own company Pure Software
Reed left Adaptive Technology in 1991 to create his first company called Pure Software, it was a product that helped troubleshoot software. -
Merging
Pure Software announced a merger with Atria Software -
Combined Company
The combined company, Pure Atria, was acquired by Rational Software. -
Netflix is made
Reed and Marc Randolph create Netflix, it strictly only offers a flat rate movie rental-by-mail to customers in the United States. -

Netflix becomes available as an app the Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, the Nintendo Wii, and other Internet connected devices. Netflix also expands to Canada, allowing Canadians to have access to Netflix. -

Netflix expands throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. -
Change of price
Netflix announced that subscription prices were changing and that DVD rental prices would drop by 20%, but that the initially free streaming service would now be charged. Many customers began to leave Netflix. Although they were losing customers their policy kept in place. -
No more DVD's
Netflix announced that they would no longer carry DVDs but Qwikster, their other business would do so. Less than a month later Netflix regretted their decision to stop renting DVD's and reversed their decision, Netflix was back to how it was before. This was said to be Netflix's lowest point in time. -

Netflix expands to Europe including the United Kingdom, Ireland, and in the Nordic Countries. In 2012, Netflix also won its first Primetime Emmy Egineering Award. -

Netflix expands to the Netherlands. Netflix also get`s nominated 31 times for an Emmy award. ``The House of Cards` won three Primetime Emmy Awards. Netflix was also the first internet TV network nominated for an Emmy Award. -
