The Bessemer Process
The first bessemer plant in America was built by Alexander L. Holley. The Bessemer Process was a high prodection, low cost was to mass produce steel. It is responsible for the modernization of American and revolutionzed the way we built railroads and buildings. With the Bessemer process, factories and skyscapers were being built all over the growing industial American and railroads were built across the nation. -
The First Transcontinental Railroad
On May 10, 1869 the transcontinental railroad was completed that linked California to the growing union. The transconteniantal railroad replaced the wagons, pony express and the stagecoaches with much faster and safer trains. The building of the railroad caused many strikes and deaths because of the strikes but it also brought over many immigrant workers. The railroad helped american become an ecconomic superpower. -
The great railroad strike
The railroad strikes of 1877 began at the Baltimore & Ohio station in Martinsburg, West Virginia. The workers there went on strike because of the 10% wage cut on workers and they did everything in their power to try and fight the wage cut, even derailing train cars. President Hayes eventually had to dispatch federal troops for the labor strikes for the first time in history because strikes were breaking out all over the nation. The workers finally gave in but had ill feelings toward Hayes. -

The National Consumer's League was founded in 1899. It's purpose was to ensure that consumer's were getting safe and reliable products. The National Consumer's League also promotes a fair marketplace for workers and consumers alike. The Railroad
The Railroad was etched by edward Hopper in 1922. Edward Hopper was born in New York State in 1882. His many artworks were insipred by a common setting such as a hotel room or railroad station to express a characters complex inner thoughts and feelings. He liked to use light and shadow and moods to show their effect at different times in the day. He later became interested in conflict of nature vs. civilization. -
Industrial series No. 1
Charles Sheeler, the artist who painted the Industrial Series, was born in Philadelphia in 1883. He played a major part in the precisionist movement. His photography and drawing styles changed with his many trips over to Europe; but he is widely known for his that were commisions by the Ford Motor company, such as this picture, which is Industrial Series number 1 that depicts the River Rouge cement plant.
