Old Man Warner, an advocate for the lottery and only one who remembers why the lottery is conducted, goes on a rant about how the younger generations are doing away with the lottery. -
Hutchinson family name is selected
Bill Hutchinson receives the black mark on his slip, so his family is chosen for further selection. His wife, Tessie, is claiming unfairness. -
Slips are put back into the box.
Just enough slips are put back into the box for each member of the Hutchinson family -
Each Hutchinson family member draws a second slip
The family goes in order of youngest to oldest child, Tessie and then Bill each drawing slips. -
Slips are revealed.
Tessie is recognized as having the black mark, indicating she is the chosen one this lottery. -
The village begins throwing the stones.
While Tessie is afraid and begging, the villagers begin the final ritual and begin throwing the stones at Tessie.
