William Golding was born September 19, 1911, in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England. He was born to Alec and Mildred Golding. -
College
Golding attended Brasenose College at Oxford. His first two years were spent studying science, then the third year, he switched to literature, following his true interests. -
Started teaching English and philosophy
His father ran the Marlborough Grammar School, therefore he was always surrounded by words. Golding attempted to write his first book at twelve, but it was unsuccessful. But that didn;t stop him from keeping with words, books, thoughts. -
Joined the Royal Navy
Golding took time off from teaching to join the Royal Navy. During his six year trip, he fell in love with the sea and sailing. When the war ended, he went back to writing and teaching. -
Lord of the Flies published
The book Lord of the Flies was Golding's first published work. It took him 21 rejections to get said book published, but he finally did it, and it was a hit. -
Movie made
The year after Golding retired from teaching, a move was made about his book by Peter Brook. The first movie of this book, but not the only one. -
Noble Prize
Golding was awarded the Noble Prize for Literature for his book. It is said that this was awarded to him because "his novels which, with the perspicuity of realistic narrative art and the diversity and universality of myth, illuminate the human condition in the world of today." -
Knighted
Golding was Knighted by England's Queen Elizabeth II. He felt very honored to be knighted, and it helped his wife, Ann's, status, which satisfied him. -
Second movie made
A new film version of the book was made. This new movie brought the book to attention by the new generation of readers. -
Golding's death
Golding died of a heart attack in Perranarworthal, Cornwall. He died eight years after moving into Tullimaar House at Perranarworthal, near Truro, Cornwall.
