The beginning
William was born on the 19 of September in 1911. He was born in the town Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall , England. He was raised by both his Mother , Mildred and his father, Alex. -
Young life
As a kid William got his education from the school his father worked at. From a young age William wrote.He even attempted to write a novel but it was unsuccessful. As a child he was immature. He would bully the other kids ,but grew out of it even calling his younger self a "brat". -
College life
William went to the University of Oxford studying English literature. In 1934 he published a book of poems before he graduated. -
Career Path
After graduation William went on to be a teacher. He taught philosophy and English at Bishop Wordsworth's School in Salisbury. His teaching experience there gave him inspiration for his novel "Lord of the Flies". Then in 1940 he quit his passion to join the Royal Navy. -
Marriage
William Golding married Ann Brookefield. They then had two children David and Judith. -
Royal Navy
William spent six years in the navy. It began his romance for the sea and sailing. He went through WW2 during his years in the Royal Navy. It brought him to see how humans can do such horrid acts. After the war William went back to teaching and writing in 1945 -
His Novel: Lord of the Flies
In 1954 Golding had his first published novel: Lord of the Flies even though it did take 21 rejections to finally have it published. This book was a hit. It explored some rough topics about how far off the limits can man get. Also the struggle between good and evil. -
After the success
In 1963 William retired ,and his novel grew so big that there was a film adaptation about the book by Peter Brook. When William was 73 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature ,and he was also knighted by the queen in 1988. Another film was made in 1990. -
The end
William Golding passed away on June 19 ,1993 due to a heart attack. He passed away in Perranarworthal, Cornwall. Before Golding's passing he spent his last few years with his wife.
