As a delegate to congress he helped draft the declaration. -

He was appointed minister to France replacing Benjamin Franklin. -

Appointed senator of state by President George Washington. Thomas Jefferson was also part of the Southern Democratic-Republican party. -

Jefferson was elected president and made Aaron Burr his vice president. -

Legacy
Thomas Jefferson's gravestone reads "Author of the Declaration of Independence [and] of the Statute of Virginia for religious freedom & Father of the University of Virginia." -
Death
Thomas Jefferson died on July 2, 1826 at his home in Virginia he called monticello.
