First colony in America (Jamestown)
Jamestown settlement in Virginia was the first permanent english colony in America. At first relations with the Indians were good but then things declined. Mortality was very high due to disease and starvation. -
Bacon's Rebellion
Armed rebellion by Virginia settlers led by Nathaniel Bacon. The rebellion was against the rule of Governor William Berkeley. It was the first time that frontiersmen took part in a rebellion. The result was Berkeley being recalled to England. -
Salem Witch Trails
Occurring in colonial Massachusetts from feb. 1692 to may 1693. These were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people being accused of witchcraft. These trials resulted in the hanging of 20 people. 14 of which were women. They started after young girls claimed to be possessed and accused local women of witchcraft. -
Great Famine in France
This was caused by a severe winter in France in 1692. This caused a bad crop in 1693. There was an approximate of 1,300,000 deaths during the catastrophe. -
Start of Industrial Revolution
This was the transition to new manufacturing processes from the 1700's to about 1820. It marks a major turning point in history. There were major developments in textiles, steam power, and iron making. -
French Indian War
Often called the seven years war this war spanned from 1754 to 1763. The main war was between France and Great Britain and there was North American conflict involved. It ended with the treaty of paris. -
Albany Plan of Union
This was a plan to make a unified government for the 13 colonies. It was suggested by Benjamin Franklin at the Albany Congress. This plan was never carried out but it was the first proposal to have the colonies as a collective whole under one governement. -
Sugar Act
Also known as the American Revenue act. The act came about from the earlier molasses act of 1733, the taxes from that act had never been collected. So for the sugar act they reduced the rate by half and enforced payment more. -
American Revolution
A time period from 1765 to 1783 when the colonists of the thirteen colonies joined together to deny being controlled by British parliament any longer. This led to the Independent United States of America. Some other results were the constitution of the United States and the three-fifths compromise. -
Birth of John Quincy Adams
Adams was born in Braintree, Massachusetts. He was the son of the second US President John Adams. -
Boston Massacre
British army soldiers shot and killed 5 people while having things thrown at them and shouted at them by colonists. This event was heavily used as propaganda by patriots to get other colonists to fight against the British. -
French Revolution
This revolution lasted 10 years from May 1789 to Nov. 1799. It was caused by political and social upheaval. It was mainly carried forward by Napoleon. The revolution overthrew the Monarchy and established a republic. -
United Kingdom Formed
Scotland, England, and Whales had previously been joined as the Kingdom of Great Britain. But in 1801 Ireland joined with them to become the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. -
Mexican War of Independence
This lasted from 1810 to 1821. A catholic priest launched the war wanting the end of Spanish rule in Mexico, redistribution of land, and racial equality. Mexico won the war and ended Spanish rule in the territory of New Spain. -
War of 1812
Fought between the US and Great Britain from June 1812 to February 1815. The US declared war because of trade restrictions brought on by the British, impressment of American sailors, and goals to expand west. The treaty of Ghent ended the war with a lot of negotiations. JQA was a main negotiator involved and and states, "I hope it will be the last treaty of peace between Great Britain and the United States."(Unger 175) -
JQA becomes secretary of state
He was appointed by president James Monroe. He served from Sep. 22, 1817 to Mar. 3, 1825. During this time he accomplished the Transcontinental treaty and the monroe doctrine. The transcontinental treaty was considered Adam's greatest diplomatic victory. -
Monroe doctrine
This document forbade further European colonization of the Americas. John Quincy Adams suggested and outlined this document, His proposal stated that "the American continents by the free and independent condition which they have assumed, and maintain, are henceforth not to be considered as subject for future colonization by any European power."(Unger 218) This is known as one of the major foundations for all future American foreign policy. -
John Quincy Adams becomes president
JQA was the sixth president of the United States. He was in office from March 1825 to March 1829. He was enemies with Andrew Jackson and even calls jackson a "barbarian and savage who could scarcely spell his own name."(Unger 230). During the election no candidate had the majority of votes so the decision went to the HoR and Clay threw is vote towards Adams. When he won the presidency he made Clay the vice president which lead Jackson to call it the "corrupt bargain". -
Texas Revolution
Also known as the Texas war for independence, this conflict lasted from 1835-1836. It was a conflict between the government of Mexico and Texan colonists. The most well known battle was the battle of the Alamo. -
Trail of Tears
Lasting from 1838 to 1839 the trail of tears was a result of Jacksons Indian Removal policy. It forced the Cherokee nation to leave their land east of the Mississippi river and migrate to modern day Oklahoma. This migration had devastating effects on the indians. 4,000 out of 15,000 died along the journey. -
Death of John Quincy Adams
He died of paralysis caused by a stroke at the House of Representatives. He died in the Speaker's Room inside the Capitol Building. -
Lincoln elected president
Lincoln was the 16th president of the US. He was the first Republican to win the presidency. The announcement of Lincoln's victory signaled the secession of the southerns states. -
Civil War
This was an internal conflict in the United States from 1861 to 1865. 11 southern states grouped together to form the confederate states of America. The confederates attacked the US Fort Sumpter which started the war. The Union won the war and it was said to be the bloodiest in history.
