    The Life of Nelson Eng

We see my development from an infant through all the assorted stages of my life up until my theoretical death date.
  • Period: to

In the Beginning (The first two years)

    Neonatal/Infant (Until year one)
Biosocial: Rapid growth and body development
Cognitive: Rapid brain growth and motor skills begin their development.
Pyschosocial: Emotional, linguistic and sensory experiences come together and begin the psychosociald development process. Social bonds with parents formed.
  • Second Birthday

By this point in my development I was growing, sleeping less, experiencing substantial cognitive growth and social growth as well as motor control gorwth.
  • Period: to

    Early Childhood/Play Years

Biosocial: The growth slows down during this phase of development but does still happen and the brain develops in overdrive allowing for greater coordination.
Cognitive: During this phase, children learn from their mentors and those around them, as well as having their language skills develop rapidly.
Psychosocial: Sex and gender identities become established and self esteem is typically high during this developmental phase.
  • Period: to

    Middle Childhood

Biosocial: Growth slows even more in this period, while the brain continues to mature which leads to faster reactions and better self-control.
Cognitive: Information processing abilities increase, as well as an increased logical understanding.
Psychosocial: Peer group relationships are established and defenses against stress begin to take form.
  • 7th Birthday

This is the year I was in Second Grade. I was finding my friends and the groups of people I felt the most comfortable around. Learning at school began to grow more complicated and I had to begin learning time and stress management skills.
  • Period: to

    Adolescence

Bioscoial: This phase includes puberty so the body under goes a growth spurt and becomes more sexual. In the brain, the limbic system tends to mature fast and leads to impulsiveness.
Cognitive: Teens start off thinking egocentrically and hypothetically and deductively as they have been instructed too. As they age the occasionally exhibit more inuitive and emotional and experiential thought.
Psychosocial: During this phase, the adolescent searches for identity, and seeks relationships.
  • High School Graduation

High School graduation, coupled with 18th birthday, are our society's marker points for entering adulthood. While there are still a couple of post-18 year markers that are societally significant, this is the marker most clearly dividing childhood from adulthood.
  • Period: to

    Emerging Adulthood

Biosocial: Homeostasis is key in this stage. Since physical strength is not as necessary as it had been in the past for this stage, other forms of expression are sought.
Cognitive: Critical thinking is advanced by college and a balance between emotion, logic and experience.
Psychosocial: Identity becomes more established during this stage and friendships are important as a stress buffer.
  • 21st Birthday

This is a societal birthday as well in that legal drinking is accessible. During this period, college is working to develop my cognitive skills while society's structuring and rules enable continued socialization with friends.
  • Period: to

    Adulthood

Biosocial: The body begins to weaken and age, the brain slows down and sex drive diminishes.
Cognitive: Intelligence becomes specialized during this era with increased areas of utilization remaining sharper than others.
Psychosocial: Personality is typically set by this stage but some changes are possible. Friends and family are still important as buffers against stress.
  • 32nd Birthday

Hopefully by my 32nd birthday I will be in my career, married and either have children or have them on the way.
  • Retirement

Hypothetically at some point around the age of 65 I assume I will retire. The managing of my time in this stage will be key. Hopefully my retirement fund will enable me to travel and live comfortably for the rest of my life, as well as leaving something for my descendants.
  • Period: to

    Late Adulthood

Biosocial: Aging takes it toll both mentally and physically during this stage as the body's time on this earth gradually winds down.
Cognitive: Mental disorders can be prevalent in this stage of development. Longterm memory is typically fine, but shortterm memory becomes weaker.
Pyschosocial: Older adults typically find ways to be active and family and friend relationships provide bonding.
  • Death

    Death
All good things must come to an end. I cannot postulate on this life event too much, since I do not know how rapidly it will happen or if I will even be aware of my decline.
