  • Franco-Prussian War

    Franco-Prussian War
    This war was between France and Prussia (Germany). France ended up losing the war and Germany took over much of their land.
  • Accession of Wilhelm II to the German Throne

    Accession of Wilhelm II to the German Throne
    When Wilhelm II got onto the German throne he showed willingness to fight and aggression. He did not renew the Reinsurance Treaty with Russia, which then lead Russia to make allies with France and cause tension between them and Germany.
  • Russo-Japanese War

    Russo-Japanese War
    Japan defeated Russia in this war, causing them to lose many soldiers and the Russian Revolution.
  • Moroccan Crises

    Moroccan Crises
    The Tangler Crisis (1905-1906) and Agadir Crisis (1911) were both caused by Germany to cause tension between Britain and France. Germany's plan backfired and instead of breaking the alliance, it further strengthened it.
  • Entente Cordiale

    Entente Cordiale
    In order to overpower the German Empire, Britain and France became allies. Soon Russia joined the Alliance too.
  • Bosnian Annexation Crisis

    Bosnian Annexation Crisis
    Austria-Hungary tried to take over Bosnia and Herzegovina. The war was useless and ended up damaging both alliances.
  • Italo-Turkish War

    Italo-Turkish War
    This war was between Italy and the decaying Ottoman Empire. This helped the Balkan League take over the Balkan Peninsula from the Turkish.
  • Balkan Wars

    Balkan Wars
    Serbia, Greece, Montenegro and Bulgaria formed the Balkan League, a military alliance against the Ottoman Empire. They were successful and weakened the Ottoman Empire. Bulgaria soon turned against Serbia and Greece, but were defeated. Because of the strength of the Balkan League, many countries saw them as a threat.

    Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria
    The revolutionary movement called Mlada Bosna (‘Young Bosnia’), killed the Austro-Hungarian heir presumptive and his wife when they were visiting Sarajevo. Before the assasination, Austria-Hungary was determined to eliminate the ‘Serbian threat’, and this only triggered a war between the two.
  • July Ultimatum

    July Ultimatum
    Austria-Hungary presented an ultimatum to Serbia. Vienna declared war on Serbia over the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and a few days later the Austro-Hungarian troops also invaded Serbia, starting World War I.
