The Korean Peninsula divides
The Korean Peninsula was ruled by Japan until world war II ended, 1945, April 29th. The Governing had lasted from 1910-1945, and split by how the Koreans wanted to rule their country. North Korea belives in communism to rule a country, and South Korea wishes to live a free democracy. The Soviets aid North Korea, mainly giving them military and weapons, while South Korea is aided by the United States. -
North Korea invades South Korea
After World War II, and when Korea split, conflict arose between the borders in hopes of destroying the other sides in order to live their way of governing in the country. With Permission from Russia, North Korea invades South Korea and continues on to the capital of Seoul. South Korea does not have a strong enough army to stop it, the war lasted from 1950-1953 and killed nearly 5 million people in the war. The Peninsula is still divided today by the 38th parallel. -
The United States joins the Korean War
President Harry Truman sends U.S military and other states military in the United Nations oin the war because they want to stop Communism from spreading to South Korea. The United Nations view on the war is fear of North taking over the world. However, at this point President Truman says that they are not going to war, but that the United Nations going to help South Korea. -
The United States is Defeated at Osan
American troops fight North Korean troops in Osan, as the first engagement between United States and the North Korean. The Americans expected an easy victory, but are surprised to find out that they are no match for the North Korean troops, because they lacked anti-tank guns and anti-tank weapons to combat North Korea. -
China supports North Korea
China joins the war to fight on the side of North Korea. China's army, called the People's Volunteer Army, starts threatening the U.S when they grow close to Yalu River (The border between communist China and North Korea) and crossed the boundary. China becomes paranoid about the sudden battle on the border, they called what the U.S army was doing was an act of aggression on China. -
The United Nations Forces launch the "Home by Christmas" offensive
General MacArthur order the United Nations forces to move to the Yalu River, the border between North Korea and NorthEast China. MacArthur said the UN troops would be home by Christmas, but they are attacked by 180,000 Chinese soldiers and have to retreat due to China's fight back against a so called, "agression" from the United States -
General Douglas MacArthur is Fired
Chinese leader Mao Zedong (1893-1976) sent troops to North Korea and warned the United States to keep away from the Yalu boundary unless they want a war. Truman did not wish for a war, and that it would likely lead to Soviet aggression in Europe, and if they let loose atomic weapons it would likely star pointless deaths of civilians, But General MacArthur believed that fighting back both communist leaders would show a message of no surrender, he wishes to provoke a battle and is fired in April -
The Battle of Heartbreak ridge rises
American and French troops start a battle with North Korean and Chinese troops in a part of South Korea known as the Punch Bowl. The U.S and France win the month-long battle. Over 25,000 Chinese and North Korean soldiers die fighting in this battle. -
Dwight Eisenhower is elected President
General Dwight Eisenhower defeats Illinois Senator Adlai Stevenson to become President of the United States. During his Campaign, Eisenhower said he would end the war in Korea. -
North Korea and South Korea call a ceasefire
After two more years of negotiations, North Korea and South Korea sign an Armistice to stop fighting. Korea is still divided, but the two countries agreed to create a neutral zone called the Demilitirized Zone to separate the countries. To this day, we could still believe that the Korean War is going on, but it is the longest ceasefire in history. -
Talks at Geneva fail to Unite Korea
