The key innovations of the 1990's

  • The Web as we know it is born.

    Towards the end of 1990, prototype software for the first web browser was being built, and the infrastructure of the World Wide Web had been completed some time before.
  • HTTP is invented.

    Hyper-text transfer protocol, or HTTP, is one of the most important inventions in the history of the internet. This protocol is what allows websites and your computer to share information with each other, and for links, images, and other interactive elements to appear in websites.
  • Windows 95 is released.

    Windows 95 was one of the most anticipated Windows releases in history. Windows 95 added features to the operating system and prepared it for the World Wide Web.
  • Google is Founded.

    Larry Page and Sergey Brin found a small internet company, called Google. The name comes from a misspelling of a mathematical number called a "Googol." This company would later come to be one of the biggest information companies in the world, and would create the most popular search engine on the planet, named after itself.
  • The AMD Athlon breaks the gigahetz barrier!

    The AMD Athlon becomes the first processor with a speed of over one gigahertz. This marks the rapid increase in speed of computer processors, eventually leading us to today's processors which are capable of around three to five gigahertz.
