The Key Events that lead up to The American Revolution

  • the French and Indian War

    the French and Indian War
    When this war started in 1754 it was because the British and the French started to claim the same land. This was mostly started for the Ohio River Valley and the fur trade. The French started off winning but the tide turned when William Pitt was sent to lead them. He brought more supplies a whole new tactic and brought better generals. The British ultimately won the war with the Defeat of Quebec. Even though they won they were put in huge debt.

    At the end of The French and Indian war the French lost a lot of land.This would anger them. The British would gain all the land west of the Mississippi River, with the exception of New Orleans. The Treaty Of Paris would end the war between them and cut off their supply to Pontiac.
  • Pontiac's War

    At the end of the war the Native Americans were left with no "Big Brother". A chief named Pontiac who would fight the British to keep them off their land. This war is named this because of their ;eader Pontiac. This war would bring the colonist closer together
  • Proclamation of 1763

    This was made for the colonist to not expand their land. The reason the Parliment wrote this so they wouldnt go even farther in debt. The colonist were furious about this especially the soldiers who were promised land.

    This was made to help the British out of war debt by taxing sugar and molasses. The colonist would then smuggle goods from the Dutch, and the Spanish.

    After the colonist had The Sugar Act was repealed the British Parliment passed The Stamp Act to help decrease the debt. The colonist would then boycott, smuggle, and petition goods. There was a big difference between the colonist reaction to the laws.

    The Quartering Act was when Parliment sent over British soldiers and made the colonist feed them and house them. The reason they did this was because they didn't want colonist to take control. The colonist were outraged and some didn't house the soldiers.
  • The Stamp Act Congress

    This was made for the colonist to have meetings over what they wanted to do to stop this. The leader was Tom Ruggles, Benjamin Franklin, and Samuel Adams. All 13 colonies were represented. The Declaration of Rights and Grievences was a document they sent to the king which said taxes written by Parliment for the British colonist were unfair.

    This law was named after Parliment member Charles Townshend. This law was made to tax glass,paints, paper, and tea imports. The colonist would disagree greatly with this act. After repealed the tea tax was the only tax that stayed.
  • The Boston Massacre

    This wasnt just a instant thing alot had happened before this happened. Parliment had sent soldiers to the colonies and forced the colonist to house them and pay for them. What had happened during the Boston Massacre was a group of colonist surrounded British soldiers on guard duty and started yelling at them and hitting them with sticks and throwing snowballs. I don't think this is a good title. It happened in Boston but the soldiers did not reload to keep firing..

    The colonist would go to the soldiers looking for the problem. Unlike the picture the soldiers were not commanded to fire. At the trial John Adams who was a Patriot defended the soldiers and only two of them had to be punished.

    The purpose of the law was to help raise revenue for colonist. It was meant to help an East India company. This is an example of a monopoly. A monopoly is the exclusive posession of trade within the community.

    The Boston Tea Party was when a group of people gathered at a ship and dumped a little under 1 million dollars worth of tea into the Boston Harbor. This was caused because the colonist were sick of the tax on tea. They thought it wasn't fair that the Parliment could tax them. The Sons of Liberty were responsible for dumping the tea. The British would respond with the Intolerable Acts.

    This act was made because of the Boston Tea Party. The coercieve acts was another name for this act.This whole thing was made up of 4 different laws. One key point is the closing of the Boston Harbor. Another key point was when Massachussets became under rule of the king.
  • Lexington and Concord

    Lexington and Concord
    A group of British soldiers were heading to Massachussets to destroy a supply line. While this happened a group of soldiers also British were confronted by a group of 80 people coming out of a tavern. They formed ranks and had a leader named John Parker who was a veteran in the French and Indian War. Amongst these men were minutemen. These soldiers were always prepared to get ready in a minute.At Concord the soldiers found nothing. The campaign had not went well for the British.

    This meeting was held to protest the Intolerable Acts. 12 colonies were represented and 343 men attended this. They agreed to cut off colonial trades and define America's rights. They tried to limit how many citizens went to war. George Washington, John Adams, Samuel Adams, and Patrick Henry were all there.
  • The Second Continental Congress

    The Second Continental Congress
    On June 14 they established the Continental Army. The Congress ask King George III if he would intervene in the Parliment. The Declaration of Causes was the document of why the colonist had taken up arms and the necessity for it. This Congress would balance out the ideas of each colonies.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Battle of Bunker Hill
    The colonist were supposed to start fortifying Bunker Hill but bypassed it and went to Breed's Hill. Joseph Warren led the colonist and William Howe led the British.The British planned on taking the soldiers at Roxbury and flanking the Southern Heights to secure Bunker Hill. They did this so that they could cut off reinforcements for the colonist. This battle was consisted with three assaults. each one there was alot of casualties.The British won the battle but had 1054 casualties.
