The birth of the Hunley
The Hunley was assembled by Horace Hunley and was created after the Pioneer. It was the first underwater threat of its time. -
The first mission
Because the diving planes were pointed downwards, the Hunley sank for the first time killing five crewmembers. -
The second mission
Given the permission to reman the submarine, Horace put a new crew on the Hunley. However during a practice run, a valve on the ballast was not fully closed to the sea causing the submarine to sink for the secon time killing all on board. -
Preparing for the last mission
The Hunley was finally ready for combat. As January approached, last minute changes had to be made and a spar torpedo was added to fix the drifiting problem on the floating torpedo. -
The Hunley sinks the USS Housatonic
The Hunley encountered the USS Housatonic and sent it's spar torpedo into the side of the ship sinking it withing five minutes. -
Raising the Hunley
The Hunley was found after 131 years of being missing and was finally discovered by Clive Clussler enabling the submarine to be raised from the ocean floor. -
The first step
Excavation of the Hunley begins -
The crew
It becomes clear that it was an eight man crew on board the Hunley during the sinking of the USS Housatonic. -
Remains
The focus of the project moves from the excavation of the submarine to the study of the remains such as bones and artifacts. -
Possible conservation plan
New technology known as cold plasma reduction could speed up the conservation of the Hunley, but scientists must still determine whether or not it can be used.
