Thomas Hobbes
Thomas Hobbes wrote the book Leviathan in 1651. He also said that all people are evil and selfish. He also believed that people make bad decisions and need a king to give them orders (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CP8k_f3PFq8). -
John Locke and the Natural Rights
John Locke believed that people were born with their 3 natural rights. The 3 natural rights that we have are life, liberty, and property. It was also said by Locke that it is the government's job to protect everyone's 3 natural rights (Byrd). -
Montesquieu's birth
Montesquieu was born on January 18, 1689. Montesquieu was a big part of the Enlightenment. He said that the government could take away your 3 natural rights and there should be some sort of separation of power. The separations of power are the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch, and the Judicial Branch (Byrd). -
Voltaire's Birth
Voltaire was born in 1694. During his life, he wrote a lot of poems and books. He became very famous because of his work. He did, however, help during the Enlightenment by saying that the government needs to be separated from the church and both the state and the government should be separated from religion so there is a tolerance. -
Steam Engine
In 1712 a man by the name of Thomas Newcomen invented the first steam engine. This was a huge technological invention that changed the way projects were shipped drastically. It was now easier to take goods across the ocean faster, safer, and more efficent. -
Weaving Machines
A man named James Kay invented a machine called the Flying Shuttle. The Flying Shuttle was a weaving machine for cotton or wool. This made the production of clothing and other cloths. -
Rousseau and the Social Contract
Rousseau wrote the Social Contract in 1762. It said that the government should protect our basic rights and if the government violates, people have the right to back out of the contract (Byrd). -
Mining
10 million tons of coal were mined in Great Britain. Coal had many uses during this time such as powering ships, steam engines, and some new inventions. The start and boom of mining increased profit for everyone and made day to day life much more efficent. -
The Start of Railroads
George Stephenson came up with the idea of a steam engine that moved on rails. This was a huge stepping stone that could potentially make the transfering of goods, products,and animals for efficently across the land. -
Child Labor and Factory Conditions
People began to investigate child labor factories. The conditions of these factories and how the children were treated was terrible. This caused issues to be reported to Parliment to prevent children working in such terrible factories. There were then laws created to help prevent child labor.
