    A boycott was introduced to the German people because there was a lot of bad press regarding the Nazis. It claimed that Jews all over Europe were trying to make Germany look bad by spreading lies about Hitler's government. Nazis would started to stand outside Jewish businesses with signs protesting that Germans should not by from Jews and Jews were Germany's downfall. Though the boycott only lasted a day, it was the just the beginning of the struggles Jews were about to face.

    Nazis Issue a Decree Defining a Non-Aryan
    The Nazi party issued a decree that defined the term Non-Aryan. This decree was mainly directed at Jews. It stated that anyone who descended from Non-Aryan, especially Jewish, parent or grandparent was a Non-Aryan. It also states that if the grandparent or parent was of the Jewish faith, then the descendant is also considered Non-Aryan.

    The Gestapo is Born
    Hermann Goring founded the gestapo in April 1933 in the German state of Prussia. Goring's first move was to limit the power of the uniformed police so they couldn't interfere with the Nazis business. After they dissolved the old police system, the Gestapo became the new secret police. They were given power that was above the law so they could arrest or search anyone they wanted without having to give a reason of be questioned.

    Nuremburg Race Laws
    The Nuremberg Race Laws targeted German Jews and denied their rights of citizenship, making them "subjects" in Hitlers Reich. These laws also forbade Jews from marrying people of the Aryan race, and stated that all people who wanted to get married had to submit medical forms to determine whether they were fit to marry. There was also a decree defining what a full jew was. Nuremberg Laws were just the beginning to a series of laws that would eventually withhold Jews, their right to be a human.

    Jews are Prohibited from all Legal Practices
    German authorities intended to make all Jewish-Owned businesses become Aryan. They started dismissing Jewish workers and managers and selling the companies to Aryan Germans for lower prices than what they were worth. The German legislative also set out to make the Jews poor by requiring them to register their land and prevent them from earning any sort of living.

    Kristallnacht
    Kristallnacht was a night when Nazi officials and Hitlers Youth carried out a violent riot against Jewish institutions throughout Germany. They destroyed hundreds of synagogues and looted lots of Jewish-owned businesses. Almost 100 Jews died that night because there was so much violence. No one tried to stop the Nazis from terrorizing the Jews. In fact the firefighters just watched the Synagogues burn.

    Germans Deport Jews from the Lodz Ghetto
    German authorities begin to deport Jews and Gypsies from the Lodz Ghetto to the Chelmno killing center. Chelmno was the first Nazi extermination camp and was just a few kilometers from the Lodz Ghetto. The Lodz ghetto housed the second largest Jewish community is Poland before the war. The SS deported half of the Jews that were in the Ghetto to Chemo. From January 1942 all the way until 1943, 145,000 Jews and a few thousand Gypsies were killed at the Chelmno Extermination Camp.

    Auschwitz-Birkenau Camp is Established.
    Auschwitz-Birkenau became the largest Nazi concentration death camp. It was located in Poland and was first established to house political prisoners. Over time it evolved into several camps where Jews and other enemies of the Nazis were exterminated in gas chambers or died from heavy labor. The camp ran from March 1942 to November 1944

    Death Penalty for Aiding Jews.
    The Nazis knew that some people were trying to hide Jews, which was seen as a capital offense. In response to this they put up posters that stated anyone who aided a Jew would receive the death penalty. This would mean that if you offered them food you would be at risk. It also asks people to report any sighting of a Jew immediately to the secret police. This decree was made make people not want to help Jews out of fear of their own life.
  • Liberation of Mauthausen

    Liberation of Mauthausen
    The concentration camp Mauthausen was one of the last concentration camps to be liberated. During the last few days before the camp was liberated the SS committed severla mass murders of the prisoners and the gas chambers were still running in the last few days of the war. On May 3rd the SS abandoned the camp and left it in the hands of 50 Viennese firefighters. On May 5 American forces came and secured the camp. Even though the camp was liberated, many of the prisoners still died from Typhus.
